Re: "New" Westerly D-55 Arrived Safely - UPDATE ...
An Update ...
Took the D-55 to the luthier today. Took it apart and examined thoroughly. Scoped the insides and everthin'. All is perfection, with the following "cosmetic" issues. The fret wire used in re-fretting has a VERY high crown, and as a result a shim was placed under the (bone) bridge to get the "right" action. SO WRONG !!
The seller had also installed a wrong string - the "G" string was a D string. Really. Well no big deal in the grand scheme - just makes you shake your head and say hmmmmm ....
The frets are all being dressed down to "Martin" height (like a 50% reduction), shim gone, new strings, new ebony with abalone dot bridge pins being installed (same kind used in Collings) with matching end pin. Action should be just fine after that.
The luthier loved the guitar (rare in Canada), and said that if he had it in his shop he would easily put a $2K plus price tag on it. I pick it up again on Thursday (today is Tues), and expect that it will really sing.
P.S. Next to my Martin this thing is a TANK ! It feels heavier than the D-6. Mondo stick.
