If it was tinted amber at the factory it will likely say "AMBER" or "AMB" on the label -- assuming the label is still there.
Thanks for the info. I just checked it says GF30 Bld. So it was almost certainly oversprayed at some point.
Thanks to everyone for the kind greetings and good information. This forum is a really friendly place.

there was quite a bit of variation in finish colors...and label writing...at Westerly. I've seen some maple G-37's and Nightbirds and such that appear that same color. Finish also changes hue a bit over the long run...sometimes. Also in the 80s Guild was doing some different things with finish techniques, and the finish itself was not the same as 60s and 70s. I would guess the finish on yours to be original, unless Elderly had a very specific reason to conclude it was refinish (other than the "Blonde" on the label). the neck looks to be a bit lighter, perhaps from play. unless it was done that way, originally.

if the guitar had a neck reset or some other major repair, there is a chance the entire guitar was refinished.

Regarding overspray/refinish - Elderly basically said that they can tell if it’s either too thick or doesn’t look factory original. It certainly doesn’t appear too thick to me but I don’t know as much about vintage guitars as they do. I probably will never know for sure but it honestly doesn’t matter, I’m loving the guitar.
By the way, I was four years after my US Navy service when my “vintage” guitar left the Westerly factory. Where does the time go?

"too thick or doesn't look factory original" can mean a lot of things. again, in the 80's there were changes in finishing. i have a 1984 SF-4, and was recently questioning the finish myself, but it is definitely factory. however, there is a chance it is poly and not nitro. otherwise, it is a different nitro (technique and/or ingredients) than "more vintage." some late 70s Starfire bass owners have reported similar observations.

your guitar is probably original, cant blame elderly for covering their liabilities though. i once bought a JS-2 bass from Rivington w rare Hagstrom pickup configuration. they swore to me the bridge pickup was a mod, and "i don't know where they found those original 2 knobs!!" i told them "this might be all factory" they said "not a chance". ...OK THEN

so the price was normal since they thought it was modded, but it was rivington, so it all evened out. rivington still wins though, as they made the sale (as did elderly)

Too thick? When I had a neck reset on of my 70's Guild, the thickness of the finish next to the neck heel was about the thickness of a credit card. The guy doing the neck reset told me he's seen that deal more than once on Guild guitars. In my case he was dealing with Guild's dark Black Cherry tint over mahogany.

I was craving this guitar and am now envious. Congrats. Elderly has sold this same guitar twice in the past two years. I hope to reel one of these in some day.

Regarding the F-30/GF-30 issue, I think the GF-30 is the same size as the 1971-early 1980's F-30, F-40 and F-212 (and the late Westerly/Corona F-47).

Interesting that the sold it twice. Probably more local last time. Even if I did sell it, which I do not foresee, I’d do it locally.

They are great communicators and prompt shippers, and if anything underrated the guitar’s condition.
