Wiser folks than me have discussed this before so I hope they will chime in. You get the benefit of my ignorance because my recollection is that while a USB mic can be helpful the quality of your recordings is driven by the nature of your analog to digital converter. The better converters will offer options besides USB for inputs. So if you are going to do home recording with a computer asking about the mic might be the wrong question. If you are doing something else, then Never Mind.

I am recording straight into GarageBand on my iPad, using a Zoom iQ6 with dual condensers. It has a lightening connection that plugs directly into the iPad, and has both a volume control and a 1/8" jack for monitoring through headphones.

I tried a few other set-ups, but this one is the simplest and produces really nice demo-quality recordings. I can literally set up to record in less than 30 seconds.

Thanks Neal! This sounds like what I need. Just want to make demo recordings into GarageBand.

Yeah, you're in business for $100, assuming you already own an iPad or iPhone. Either will work just fine.

I set my iPad on a music stand, so I can adjust the proximity of the microphones to my guitar. I record just the guitar, then multi-track the vocals and other instruments. Super easy, and the sound quality is good enough.

Thanks again Neal. That's a hell of an acoustic guitar collection you have there. What are the stand outs from that bunch?
