Hi Guys,

I've done some searching but never found any conclusive answers,

I read on GAD's blog that the he found the 70s starfires to have medium to thin neck profiles.
I'm wondering, what kind of neck profiles do the 60s starfires have in comparison to the later 70s models?

And from 73 onwards did they continually make changes to the neck profile and make it thicker?

Anyone care to chime in?

Jeff

I've got a '66 V that has a medium profile. It's certainly thicker than a Fender but nothing outrageous. It's very comfortable for me.

I had a '70 or '71 SF III (Emerald) that I sold because the neck was too thin (top to bottom thickness). I found it too uncomfortable to play. It was a shame because it had original DeArmonds.

I briefly owned a '70 Starfire III, also with original DeArmonds, and it's neck was also too thin for my liking. It was considerably thinner than the 60's Starfires and CE-100s I've played.

My 66 SF-V has a medium C shape feel to it. and my 74 SF-4 has a slimmer/fasters D shape neck feel to it. I love both! :D

My 61 SFIII has a neck that is almost tiny, quite a thin back-to-front profile, and a small-ish nut width too.

Which, on paper, for me, should make for an uncomfortable guitar to play, yet strangely, the opposite is true, I love playing it.

The terms "medium", "small", and such, are so subjective as to be useless.

For years, the only guitar I had was a Guild S300A-D with a 1 5/8" nut and a pretty thin neck. For me, this was "normal".

I then bought a Jackson that had a thin neck with a 1 11/16" neck, and I thought it was *HUGE*. Then that became "normal".

Then I bought a '59 reissue Les Paul - Holy HUGE what a neck!

Then I bought a '58 reissue Les Paul. Turns out, all those other necks were tiny!

In relations to a '58 Les Paul, a 70s Starfire neck is thinner than a pencil.

Now that said, I've owned 3-4 70s Starfires, and they all had varying neck carves. The tiniest was the '73. The thickest was the '79. The '76 was close to the '79. Since I like 1 11/16" nuts now, I prefer my 2000 over all of them.

Neck width on my '67 SF IV is 1 5/8", string to string is 1 3/8". The back has what I would call a "deep C" shape, very much rounded and well proportioned, if it was just scaled up a little more.
