This is my first post! I'm mainly and electric player (have too many), but I still have my venerable old 1982 Madeira, "adjusted and distributed" by Guild ; - )

I'm sentimental about it because it was given to me for my High School graduation. And it was my first real guitar. Previously learned on a $25 beater. I've played many a song on this. And it's been recorded a lot over the years. It sound surprisingly nice for strumming parts if you know good mic placement.

My friend recently purchased a used Guild D-40, so now I'm jealous! Mine is all mid range and lacks that fine Bass. Also the playability was harder. Action etc... was too high. So this has driven me to buy some used Grover tuners (which help a lot) and later, replace the generic saddle I had stuck on years ago. It came with a compensated saddle, which was too high. My nut cracked (no joke!) so I glued it back and it's been functioning fine. But that would also be good to replace. I did adjust the neck by making a 3/4 turn on the truss rod and it fixed the slight bow that had developed over these 25 years. Much better playing.

So really, I'm going to address these little things that will make it an even better playing instrument. That'll keep me satisfied from looking at new ones! And these pix (if they work!) can show some fellow Madeira owners what they are about.

Mutato (There will be questions about your screen name),

Welcome to the best forum you'll find on the World Wide to answer any questions you might have about guitars, especially Guilds (and maybe even guitars that were "adjusted and distributed by Guild").

I believe there are Madeira owners amongst us who might better address your queries, so just sit back and enjoy the flood of replies.

These are great student guitars and they do sound decent! Mine is an A-30R I have had it for 37 yrs. I think mine needs more then just a trussrod adjust to put it back into easy playing shape but, I'll compensate for it with lighter strings for now until I can address the issues. Once again Nice to have you aboard!!!! Have a Merry Christmas!!!!!

I've always been curious about Madeira guitars. Were they mostly solid tops, mostly laminated tops or some of each? I've seen a few on eBay at reasonable prices, but want to know a little more about the different models.

The one I have is from the early 70's and it has a Laminated top. I think most of them from this era had lam tops along with Lam Backs and sides, I can't say for the later years. They were very good instruments for student guitars and at least mine held up pretty well. Hope this answers some ?s for you. FYI mine is a model A-30R I think these were the nicer appointed models.

Thanks, I thought they might be, so this confirms it.

Is there any way to tell if mine has a laminated top? I just checked with a magnifying glass at the sound hole edge and also used a mirror to glance up at the underside of the edge. I see grain going in the same direction on both the top and the underside. The top is so thin, I can't see how they are making it in layers!

I measured the thickness and it's 1/8" thick at the edge.

The top on mine is very thin and it is a Lam top for sure. Look at the edge of the sound hole, if you can see grain going thru the hole at the edges then it is solid if not then it is a Lam top. If you can't tell for sure post a shot of the edge so I can see the edge clearly and I should be able to tell you for sure.

Man, I remember when Madieras were really nice guitars. I worked at Ted Shogry's Music Center in Pittsfield MA in the late 70's and he was a Guild/Madiera dealer.

I bought a dreadnaught with herringbone rosette and binding from him and it was a terrific acoustic. Wish I still had it!
