We have a lot of wildlife corridors in my fair city and we see lots of deer, but this is an all-timer in town. Depending on how you count your points, there are 10 to be seen.

He casually crossed the street as I drove home around 8:30 last evening, and then began to prune one of the shrubs in someone's front yard.

What a beautiful photo Joe!

The deer has an unusual "hairy" antler. Not used to see it here in Europe.

Most deer grow a new "rack" of antlers each year. In the spring and early summer the antlers consist of cartilage surrounded by tissue with blood vessels. The tissue gives them the "hairy" appearance. (In this stage the antlers are sometimes said to be "in velvet".) Later in the summer the antlers harden and the outer tissue falls and is scraped off. That's when the antlers have the more "combat-ready" appearance.

I have more photos of deer in velvet than in the 'combat ready' mode. There seems to be less tension in the spring and they're more approachable. When the testosterone rules, it's a different day altogether! :anonymous:

Poser:

Is your avatar a "stuiver" from the Netherlands?

Hi Putmonk. My intent was to use a 'guilder' as my avatar. I thought I was being clever. But since I know next to nothing about currency from the Netherlands, I could be mistaken.
