On Chicagowineguy's suggestion, I called Willie's American Guitar and had a talk with a fellow about this: http://williesguitars.com/index.cfm/oth ... /7/image/1

It sounds like the F30R is similar to the Martin 000-18, at least as far as the scale length, nut width and body shape go. The crack on the top has been professionally repaired. In Westerly I trust, so I'm interested. Does $850 seem like a good price?

Close to pulling the trigger,
Dogberry

PS
In the small world department, it turns out that the guy at Willies I talked to was a student at Macalester College for the same 4 years I worked there. Weird.

What is Willie's return policy? I think you have a 48 hour period to return the guitar, and just be out shipping. I don't think they charge a restocking fee.

You're correct. If I return it I pay the shipping and insurance. And they only charge $30 to ship it, insured, to me. So there's not much risk there.

A rosewood F30? Go for it! The price is fair and, yes, it's about the same body size and scale as a 00018. I have an F30 and my friend has a 1972 00018. We trade off guitars all the time when we're playing and I think my F30 edges out the 00018 tone-wise. Add the rosewood factor and I think you'll have a real winner.

There's another recent thread in the FS section I think titled F30RW... same guitar.

They're really nice guitars. Definitely along the same lines as a Martin 000 size-wise. Mine was just very slightly thinner in depth than my Martin 000-15:

That one's been at Willie's & listed at $850 for some time. I don't think that's an unfair price at all, and they're a reputable dealer. There may even be some wiggle room on the price given how long it's been there.

For posterity's sake (and in the name of fueling GAS!!!):

I posted the link to this guitar on another thread. It looked like a nice price to me. If you think you can enjoy owning it, without letting the top crack bother you, I'd say pull the trigger.

Fungus points out that Willie's has had this one for while, which I didn't know. You might try making an offer - say $800, shipping included - and see what they say.

Hey dogberry,

I know 2 guys who seem to be on a quest to try every guitar ever made. They speak highly of Willie's and have each bought several there. I'd like to run over there myself one day soon.

The F30 don't look like a bad deal to me, I've played 2 in the last year, a Westerly and a Tacoma, liked them both, but I must confess I lean toward Martins in that size. Let's just keep that our little secret, O.K.?

Hi Dogberry,

That F30R has been there a while, it was about when I bought mine. Apparently Willie is happy to haggle (he wasn't with me but 10,000miles is a long way for an eyeball to eyeball deal...), so might be worth trying to strike a deal. Only thing that put me off (apart from his shipping costs to NZ), were the knobs for electrics which I thought looked a bit huckery. Apparently they are original though..

Good luck with the purchase, I think F30's are great guitars, and the rosewood ones aren't easy to find.

Cheers, Ian

Lookey here!! Hans needed for this one.........Hans is on his way. :D :D :D GUILD F-30RNT WHAT!?!?!?! :?:

Hello Treem,

That looks like one of the F-30Rs they did after 1976, which I mentioned briefly in the F-30/F-30R section ( page 118) of The Guild Guitar Book. They are really rare and so far I've seen just a couple. The ones that I've only heard about are in Japan and I assume the one in the video is there too.

Cool looking guitar!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
