Maybe I'm late to the party, but... (JA-era, Jack Casady content)

While I've heard/read plenty of discussion about Mr. Casady's having played a Fender Jazz Bass through Versatone Panoflex amps extensively while with the Airplane, I don't recall hearing anything about that bass ever having had a "P/J" pup configuration (especially see middle PIC):

(BTW: these PICs are new to me, maybe others have seen them before)

He had the Pbass pup put in as a mod.
I find the more interesting thing in the pics is he is playing with a plectrum (i think they used to call it that in the '60's;)).
If you like the early JAirplane bass tone you gotta get a J bass and put a Pbass pup in it and use a Versatone amp.
Why aren't the Fender forum peeps as fanatacal as the LTG peeps about Jack tone?:

Thanks, lungimsam. I'd read many interviews of him but had somehow missed that one.

I guess Slick was goin' for the Babushka look with that head scarf...

You are correct, adorshki: Magic Mountain Music Festival @ Mount Tam (Marin Co. CA) in June of 1967. Photo credit goes to Peter Simon.

So, according to Jack's memory in the article, that has to be the '65 Jazz bass in the pic, since the '60 Jazz bass got stolen before he came to Cali in '65, and this concert is allegedly in '67.
He has recovered his stolen Guild. I wonder if he will ever get the '60 Jazz back.
