Maybe buying a Starfire IV...

I popped into a guitar shop near me today 'just for a look' (ha) and, surprise surprise, they had a cherry 1967 Starfire IV. It is beautiful and sounds amazing.

There are only a few issues with it:
-no pickguard -- this seems to have been removed at some point
-no original case (it comes with a 'Gibson period case' I am told)
-the covers of the pickups have been removed

None of these things really bothers me that much, I guess. I'd like to replace the pickguard, I think, as I really like the look of the 60s ones. Ideally, I'd like to get a Guild case for it, too, but this wouldn't be a priority. I have no idea if it'd be worth finding covers for the pickups or if I even could.

The only other thing is there's checking all over the guitar. This doesn't really bother me and I think it looks lovely with the cherry red color, but it made me wonder if it might indicate other issues with the guitar or if it'd be better to try and find a Starfire without checking. Do most Starfires this old have checking?

So does this sound like a guitar worth buying and if so, how much do you think it's worth? I'm in the UK so prices for Starfires are unfortunately a bit skewed here (they seem to be significantly more expensive). And are there any little things I should look out for before I buy that I might overlook? (I've never bought a vintage guitar before.)

I love the guitar already but it's a lot of money for me so I'm really nervous! I've wanted a Starfire for ages, too, so I keep wondering if this is 'the one'...

"Gibson period case" thats a good joke, are they charging extra for it?

Are you sure those are the original pickups? It seems more likely that they have been replaced, in which case i wouldn't buy the guitar.

Check the heel, headstock, and other critical areas for signs of damage and repair.
A good condition guitar this old will have some fading and some slight checking, but i've seen pretty mint looking Starfire V's and IV's from the 60's that don't seem to have any checking at all.

I would be cautious,

What are they asking for it?

I would rather go for this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guild-Starfir ... 1e6a140e9f
It's in the UK, you should check it out.

Thanks for your response, Jeffm.

I don't know if they're charging extra for the Gibson case -- I'm guessing they factored 'a case' into the price as it said 'case included' on the tag. I asked if it was the original case and got that answer -- I don't want a Gibson case so I guess I'd have to sell it and look for a Guild one.

The first thing I asked was 'are those the original pickups?' They said that they are, but they're missing the covers. I don't know enough to know by sight if they are or not, though.

They're asking £1200 for it. I've seen that V on eBay and it's lovely, but far beyond what I can afford right now. (I'm looking for a IV or V, haven't decided which yet but I think I'd be happy with either.)

I have never seen a Guild Mini Humbucker without cover.
On the other hand I realized that exactly such a cover is sold on ebay currently

but again, I have not seen a 1967 Starfire without covers on the pickups yet. Very strange.
You also might check the serial number of the guitar, 1967 would be roughly in the EL1168 to EL1840 serial number range (that's just a rought guide, it might not be exactly correct).
The original mini humbuckers look like this:

By the way, the below one has GUILD stamped in, but on my 1967 Starfire IV they have no GUILD name stamped in.

Hmm, that is interesting. I will try to take a picture next time I go back, if it's still there.

It's just occurred to me that I don't remember seeing a truss rod cover on this guitar - I'll have to check that as well, as I'd definitely want one of those (eBay if I have to).

If the guitar is in good condition you should investigate further and find out if those are the original pickups!
