Hello,
I am currently looking at an early 60's m65 to purchase. Great shape except the high e string slot is missing the end wall to keep it secured. Any ideas about correcting situation or a replacement tail piece? Also since I am new to the older Guilds any ideas of a ballpark value?

Thanks, Joe

You could drill a hole in the side that's not broken off, run the string backwards through it, then around the side where it would normally runs. You could also string the top two strings through the B string's slot, but the extra sideways angle on the string path might tend to pull the bridge over to the bass side. A new M-75 tailpiece should work, but you'd have to de-gold it.

Scratch the above idea. What about stringing the high E through the ball end of the B string, once it's mounted? Seems like you could run the string through the ball, out and around the bass side of its original string slot and not alter the tailpiece any.

You think there may need to be an adjustment for intonation?

Nah, where it's anchored shouldn't change the playing length of the string any -- you just need a reasonable way of securing it at our near its factory position in the tailpiece.

Cool! Thanks again for the advice.
