One of my local PBS is finally airing a decent pledge special tonight.
"Love for Levon", a tribute concert honoring Levon Helm has Warren Haynes, Gregg Allman, and Dierks Bentley listed as appearing.

I have my DVR set. anyone catch this one?

For some reason I never really got into that countrified sound of the Band, but I never forgot that organ work for "Chest Fever" on Music from Big Pink. Maybe the only Band tune I ever really liked.

I'm the last person to like country (being a long time Yankee), but The Band transcended that for me. I hear them more as "roots" influenced, rather than country. Definitely not the Opry/mandatory cowboy hat version, but rather transmitting the soul of real people from the South. (Robbie talks eloquently about this in the Behind the Music about The Band and Big Pink albums.)

I'm with you. Back in the day (1976) my pals played some material by The Band for me. like Rag Mama Rag, Oh The Shape I'm In, etc; and I told them I hated it.

But after all this time I have developed a taste for it, and know that The Band is revered by lots of folks, especially playing musicians. Sorry, I lost that battle, and gave in.

Of course, speaking of Robbie. Where was he?!?
I bought his CD "Clairvoyant" when it first came out. Initially I was impressed until I read the liner and found out that many of the gritty blues guitar licks were actually played by Slowhand, Eric Clapton on this album. I don't really listen to that CD much any more.

"The Band'' Hands-down, all-time greatest American album of whatever genre you might ascribe to it.

Thanks for posting that link, Joe. In that interview Levon came across as a very easy guy to like.

The Band, what a great group! I always enjoyed hearing Levon and Rick Danko sing. It wasn't opera but it was REAL and heartfelt.
