I love his attitude about playing "recreationally" and dismissing all the rock star stuff. He's always had a great sense of humor and never seemed to take himself too seriously. I think that is one of the things that always stood out about him, is that he didn't seemed to have "LGS" (lead guitarist syndrome), and instead wrote and played to serve the song, not his ego. I like his comments I've read elsewhere about playing "color guitar" instead of leads, meaning he creates sound to flesh and fill the songs, not just shredding leads to feed his ego. IMO King Animal is the best thing they've done since BadMotorFinger.

My favorite quote of his is from the Hype! documentary when he's explaining the grunge explosion, starting at 1:54, in and around a great clip of Soundgarden playing "Searchin' With My Good Eye Closed."

Wow I've never even heard of that movie! I'll have to give the whole video a watch.
My favorite quote of his was from the interview bits in Louder Than Live where he says about their success: "That's what I love about America, the crap rises to the top"

Just to add to what Alan said, I don't know if anyone else noticed, but inside the CD booklet for "King Animal", where the personnel for the band is listed, Thayil is listed as "lead and color guitar".

That's the first time I've seen that!

As Alan pointed out, I think its pretty cool how he acknowledges what he is doing for the band. Adding "color" to make the total sound the best it can be, make it unique to Soundgarden, etc.

Other guitarists that do this come to mind - certainly Alex Lifeson of Rush fits in this category. He is a master at "coloring" Rush's songs, and like Thayil, often does not even take a solo.

And you could also perhaps argue both Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood take "turns" doing this, even within an individual song.

Sorry everyone, no conference call interview with Kim Thayil. The publicists gave our reviewer Chris Cornell instead. :(

Now I just have to figure out a way to meet the boys pre-concert or go backstage. Perhaps I could pretend to be a roadie.

The concert's tomorrow night, and our reviewer tells me he might need my help. So my heart jumps, thinking press pass or something like that. 8) But he says he might leave before the encore to go back to the office to write the review for the Sunday paper, and wanted to know if I could keep track of what songs they play after the encore so we can put the setlist online. Okay, I said, I can do that.

I also have to find out which one of our photographers is shooting the show, so I can make sure he or she gets some photos of Mr. Thayil playing his Guilds.
