Sweet. Not a piece you'd think a group called "Cowboy Junkies" would produce. You'd think. A name like Velvet Underground would be more appropriate for this piece. Vaguely similar. With Nico. But the Junkies are more refined than Velvet Underground - go figure.

I knew about The Cowboy Junkies mostly from The Trinity Session, their second album when first it came out in 1988. It was an underground sleeper for bit, and then it took off. I had heard of them (but not heard them) before because of their first album, which was only a minor local thing, mostly covers.

The Trinity Session was done in a style that was very old school back to the days of the first electric recordings (other than that it was done with DAT recorder). It was recorded all in one night in 1987, in a church with great acoustics, and with only one microphone. It is the album that Sweet Jane is from, but as most reviewers agree, that tune is far from the best track on the album.

There is a fair amount of live video footage of them on Youtube - Austin City Limits, Jools Holland, Massey Hall, etc. And there is a live recording of them together with John Prine, which I might've posted except that the cutesy graphics added to the clip are immediately nausea-inducing and I wouldn't want to be held accountable for the cleanup of your keyboards and screens. There was also once a very sultry clip of Margot Timmins and Jeff Healey (on acoustic guitar), just the two of them, floating about for a bit, but I can't find it now.

I still recall where I was when I first heard that tune on a Boston-area radio station ('BCN). Stopped me in my tracks.

They put on a good live show, too.

Couldn't disagree more...Unless they got better at performing. I saw them opening for Bruce Hornsby not long after that Sweet Jane cover got popular and they sat in a circle on stage and droned on and on. Great for putting you to sleep.

My wife & I saw them a few years ago (roughly 30 years after your experience!), in a relatively small venue (about 200 seats), & enjoyed their show.

edit: the other 198 folks in attendance that evening also appeared to have a good time!

I first saw them when they toured because some friends of mine were in a band that opened for them in our city. I really liked them.

In the midst of so much grungy music at the time, I think they were part of a movement of bands taking a more quiet, dreamy approach, like Mazzy Star, Portishead, and some others.

Minor veer .... I stumbled across this oddity featuring Margot Timmins.

Two old Winipeg (Winterpeg) buddies get together to reminisce about when they were youngsters. Margot steps in and helps out.

Done in the studio of the guy with the backwards baseball cap.

I don't hate them. Just that in concert they put me to sleep. Hopefully they no longer sit on chairs in a circle and ignore the audience for their shows.

They are still around. This video is from 2017. I play this song with my jamming buddies but we play it more like Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
