Yeah, I know, then I should shut my mouth and quit bitching. But sometimes I really like to bitch I guess. Goes along with being a curmudgeon.

I bought a beautiful Oxnard D-55 from a guy on Reverb early Saturday morning. I sent him the funds immediately and he responded that he couldn't get the the PO in time to ship in out that day. Fine, he was going to ship it Monday morning. Monday evening, no communication. Tuesday, no communication. I finally take the silence to mean I have been ripped off so I ask for a refund. I finally received a scathing rebuke from this guy this evening saying I am an impatient buyer, his wife is having an affair with his best friend and some other unmentionables. Long story short I finally got my refund. I had contacted Reverb yesterday and still haven't heard back from them. This has basically soured me on that site and I have an awful lot of really good transactions through them.
There are some really shady folks out there but I have definitely had way more positive experiences through Ebay, Reverb, Craigslist, forums than the bad ones.

@Greenstar that's my new FAVORITE!!! "My wife is having an affair with my best friend and....." too funny. When that guy didn't even barter except for to ask me a couple questions on Reverb he paid what I asked, plus shipping and tax I boxed that sucker up and RAN TO UPS because a) that's what I'm supposed to do, and b) he was so excited he couldn't wait. I even expedited shipping at my cost to make sure it got there quickly. And he was so giddy and happy!! What's wrong with people??

I've sold some stuff on reverb.com and I've never had any body request a refund but I do have a couple of points of interest.

1) I sell as-is, with no returns. I ask people to look at my 100% approval rating.

2) I never, ever sell outside of the continental United States. If people ask me to, I tell them to find an American friend who will receive the package and ship it to them. Once I do that, I never hear back from them.

3) I tell people I like to trade favorable feedback, but if I don't see their feedback, I won't give them any feedback at all, until I finally get feedback or until the 3 month deadline passes and reverb's daily request for feedback disappears.

4) Worst thing that happens is when somebody won't pick up a package. Reverb says that eventually the package will be returned to Seller (me) and I'll have to reimburse the money, but they'll also contact the Buyer and try and light a fire under their arses.

5) I always send Signature Required. Generally, I'll keep an eye on tracking and when it says, 'package received by neighbor, Jane Doe', I'll send a message to the Buyer like, 'You'll be glad to know your neighbor Jane picked up the package for you. Hope you like it, I'll be glad to exchange fave feedback.'

6) The other thing is, we're dealing with musicians, so of course it's like herding cats!

I sold a tailpiece to somebody on the forum about 5 years ago and the package never showed up. The guy was really nice, but there was a point when he said, 'maybe we ought to call about insurance.' I was desperate for the dough, so I Google Earthed his house and saw a Big, Overgrown Shrub next to the front door. Hmmm. I phoned him and said, 'Dude, do me a favor, walk outside for a second.' He did and I said, 'you see the big green bush next to your door? Look behind it for a second and tell me if you see anything.'
He did and he said, 'Hey, there's a package here!' 'No kidding? Does it say Harry Hxxxxx?' 'Yeah, it does.'
Problem solved.

o.k., so here is the 3rd one. I sold a really nice (and expensive) Gibson SJ 200 Std. on Ebay a couple years back. The guy paid my buy it now price immediately and I shipped next day. Apparently, it was a young kid (I think fourteen or something like that) that had used his Father's Ebay and PayPal account to buy the guitar without his Fathers permission.

His Father came unglued (that I understand and can appreciate). But, he went on and on chastising me for not doing my due diligence and making sure the buyer was at least 18 years old. When I explained to the Father that I didn't have the ability to do that and that he might want to hold his Son accountable he pretty much lost it.

Although I might have been able to fight it I decided not to and reimbursed his money but not the return shipping. That sent him off on a new rant with words I'd never even heard before and I've been around a while.

And yes, he was from my favorite (or not) State just like the other two examples I mentioned.

Years ago, I sold an Omega Speedmaster to a guy in the U.K. who after a few days of stalling on paying says he just found out he's having a baby, so can we cancel? And I'm thinking, is expecting a baby a valid reason to no longer need to know the time or impress your buddies?

Then there was the guy who bought an SG Gothic for his kid because his wife kept some freakin Marshall stack or something in a divorce settlement and he wants his kid to blow her ears out with this thing, but the kid wanted a cell phone instead...

I scored an Octavia pedal once that needed some tinkering for $300. I finally figured it out it was the volume pot, needed a little help. I had it on eBay for $2k and a guy offered me $1500 for it, but only if I jammed on it over the phone for a while, Paypaled me while I was playing.

Later after he got the pedal, he sent me a rather excruciating ten minute demo ;[)

Then there was the guy who wanted me to model my super tight leather motorcycle pants for him...

Some of the ones that got away. Damn it, why can't I find the pics to the matching Tycobrahe Parapedal I sold?

I personally never sell guitars online. Instead I take 'em to Elderly Instruments and either put 'em on consignment or more often trade 'em for something else. Less cash in my pocket but less fuss and hassle too (aside from making the drive out to Lansing and back).

This is my approach as well. It’s an easy way to avoid giving others the opportunity to impact my life negatively. I’ve yet to even do a consignment, sticking to outright sales or trades with dealers. Quick, straightforward, & clean - with no looking back.

I sold a nice consumer level camera to a guy on eBay. He demanded a return because he claimed there was a little dust inside the lens. When the camera was returned to me I took some pictures to check things out. The image numbers were way off from the last numbers I had taken before I shipped the camera to him. Like, it wasn't even the same camera! He'd pulled a swap.

Otherwise I've had years of good experiences on eBay and Reverb. I'm done with eBay for music gear though. Reverb fees are far better.

I too, primarily use Reverb. It's a good site although I'm starting to see some things I'm not sure I like but that may just be me.

Can you explain more about the fees you mention. After Ebay lowered their final value fee to pretty much match Reverb, I thought the fees between the two sites were pretty comparable. But, Reverb for sure has a whole lot more product and items to choose from.

Like Richard California is my “favorite” state. The only refund I’ve had to do was to a guy who bought a NH F-47MCE (I was the original owner) but reported that the neck was too small.

I see a Vox Pacemaker! I really like the Thomas Organ Voxes, especially the tube ones they made for 8–9 months before going solid-state. I have a Berkeley Super Reverb too. Have often thought about picking up an old Rockman…I see the rack mount units on Reverb but rarely the smaller ones.

The Rockman really was the sh*t, if you happened to think Tom Scholtz had pretty great tone, which he did.

Yeah, a Pacemaker, went to some lucky local teen in a band. I like all Thomas Organ stuff, especially the Wahs with the TDK inductor, still have one. Hendrix preferred the Thomas Organ TDK version rather than the super expensive Italian made V846 with a Fasel inductor, way more "vomity" sounding, that's how I describe it.

The Berkeley was my first real amp, roll around tilt cab with 2x10's, heavenly reverb. My guitar at the time was a 60's solid body Silvertone, not Danelectro (Harmony?) with the gold foils, and as I was finding out, not a very good neck for any sort of lead playing.

I got a wild hare one day to take it down to Millman's Pawn, still there last I checked, same guy behind the counter in fact, called you "young man" back then and he still does, but he called everybody young man... Their shop was a little smaller back then and somehow I became obsessed with a small box Plexi Marshall 50W in the music corner, no cab, just a head. nothing to even try it on.

I had to sweeten the deal majorly with all kinds o booty, but I walked out with the Plexi without paying any cash. Boy was I happier than king sh*t on turd island ;[))) That was the beginning of an incredibly intense relationship with the Marshall, mostly playing Bon Scott AC/DC at blistering volumes, sometimes delving into Sabbath, Priest, a whole lotta Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, etc.

I had developed a notion that turning tube equipment on/off is what kills it, kinda like the military developed the same notion... so I never turned the Plexi off, ever. And while this made it a little sweaty in my jam space in the summer, in the winter it was all the heat I needed in the part of the house I closed off to stay warmer.

What impressed me about the Marshall at the time was that it was completely bombproof. I hadn't met a Fender amp that didn't blow up even after going in for costly repairs, and had a string of them against the wall to prove it.

This being the 80's all Customer Support was by phone, and I was on the phone with Marshall in Westbury NY, when a kind gent on the end of the line actually traced who the Plexi, it was a '68 it turned out, had actually sold to new and it was "That guitar player in Black Oak Arkansas".

In the end, I parted ways with the Plexi for a 120W Sound City because I had loud drummer issues, and they (that store is still in business also, son in law worked there before Covid started) wanted cash to boot, seems hard to believe now... but they also had an Explorer I wanted in the worst way, I think I traded away my '66 SG Standard during the same deal, the memory is too painful to mentally verify... I remember figuring out pretty quickly that the Explorer - especially in it's hardcase - was an insane boat anchor. That affair didn't last very long.

I still regard that one piece of gear as the only one that ever got away that matters.

My information might be a little outdated but eBay had reduced their fee to 3.5% to match Reverb on "guitar" sales only. Not pedals, not amps, straps, parts … nothing but "guitars" was reduced. I just now read a post in eBay forums from a seller upset because he was charged the 10% fee for the vintage Rickenbacker guitar he sold in the Vintage Instruments category because the 3.5% fee is applicable to the Guitars category but not the Vintage musical instruments category. Bye bye eBay.

Just checked out the fee structure at Ebay. I can't speak to the Vintage Rick issue you mentioned but for everything listed in the guitar/bass category the final value fee is 3.5% including shipping cost but excluding sales tax.

I don't list much on Ebay anymore, just because Reverb has taken over the musical instruments category but when I did/do, I've never chosen the vintage category, just Musical Instruments and the fee charged to me has consistently been 3.5% and has been for a number of years now.

Hope that helps.

I no longer sell guitars on ebay, and no longer ship or have guitars shipped to me. overall ive done well. a couple problems here and there but they were somewhat minor in nature and overall ive been very lucky. the shipping for me has become problematic, as has the tax and fees. honeslty, it has taken the fun out of it. id rather just deal locally and on this forum (i also like to drive 🚐), or not deal at all.

ive bought a couple guitars from Richard P. and we also made a trade or 2. everything always worked out. one got damaged in shipping...we worked it out, and both moved on- it was not his fault or mine. A buyer is stupid to get blacklisted by Richard...as u just never know what he will have next

Sounds like my recollections about eBay's musical instrument fees are still correct then. I don't think eBay has the large audience for music gear like they used to. In fact I think it's pretty much dead. 10% for their automated service is outrageous. Good riddance to 'em.
