Is Harley Flanagan really that much of a celebrity?

I think we've all seen pictures of Harley in action way back in the day with his Starfire (posting one of my favorites), but this auction seems very optimistic.

I don't think I have ever heard of him although I am pretty sure the first picture I saw of a "sweet spot" Starfire was him playing it.

I note that bass is circa 1965 and Flanagan was born in 1967.

Seller says

It’s not some thing that should be played it should be displayed and kept out of the case because it is very fragile the instrument is 56 years old.

With the binding the way it is they are probably right but there are lots of folks with 60's Starfire basses who still play, not display.

My brother was always very into punk rock and related genres, so I am familiar with the Cro-Mags. That said, bands of this sort are not known for their loving care of equipment, nor are punk fans the first that come to mind when we think of affluent materialist collectors of high-price items. I'd be surprised if anyone is willing to pay that much for this bass, completely aside from the condition of it. In addition to the binding decay, the action looks pretty high and I wouldn't be surprised if the neck was due for a reset.
