They don't call it the "Chesterfield" logo for nothing. You can definitely see the inspiration there.

Thank God, they didn't smoke Camels!

Y'know, I never noticed it before, but there's something kind of Dali-esque goin' on with Joe Camel's nose, nyet?

Is that kinda like the naked lady on the pack of Camel non-filters?

Look close, and it helps to have a dirty mind.

Hmmm....I know I've got the right qualifications but I can't see it...and now I see a donkey's profile on Joe's hair and ears.
Funny thing about Dali too, a lot of paintings have stuff that looks like it's supposed to be something else but it really isn't. I'm tellin' ya that guy was a champion chain-jerker!

It is truly amazing how much you can contribute if you only have a copy of "The Book".

Page 17:

"Another headstock inlay that has become sort of a trademark is the so called "Chesterfield" inlay, which was usually made of pearloid. It is indeed very similar to the design on a Chesterfield cigarette package and it more or less replaced the single "G" on most instruments after 1967, though occasionally you find the "G" on some instruments while others of the same period already had the "Chesterfield" inlay.

The design of the "Chesterfield" inlay stayed basically the same through the years, with the white column having black lines engraved into it.

By the early 70's, the column of the "Chesterfield" inlay became all-white."

OH, I copied and pasted the link on the first pass, so I saw the Camel pack but not the hidden image. Probably just because it's a bit small and blurred. Like my brain. Fascinating site though, and lo and behold, there's a bunch of Dali images! No Joe Camel though.... :?

That's why I included both the three-line and solid Chesterfields. :)
Back on subject, I always just figured "chesterfield" had a definition as a kind of logo or coat of arms type of thing, and the cigarettes were named for that reason...but a couple of searches reveal no such etymology...
A little bit more research shows they're named for Chesterfield county Virginia. Heart of tobacco country and all that, eh?
