Haven't had my D-40 "Richie" out for a while. Put new strings on and have been playing it a lot the last few weeks. It's a fine guitar and IMHO outshines most D-18s out there. One of my early guitars in my Guild GAS madness was a 76 D40 which was disappointing. Just seemed dead no matter what I did. And back when the new Connecticut Guilds were first on the market last year, I had the chance to try several of them and I found them lacking too (except for the price tag :? )
Just as in life, one comes across "Good People" like all of you here on the forum, you also come across guitars that are just a pleasure to hold and play. My Tacoma D-40 is one of those.

Frankly, I feel the only brand of guitar being made today that just ALWAYS sounds great is Collings. It's the only brand I wouldn't hesitate to buy before playing it.

Interesting statement. I have 3 Collings (2 guitars & a mando) and have played many others and in thinking about it, I have to agree. I can say the same about Bourgeois too.

Interestingly, I would have said the same about Collings, but I played a couple at Elderly recently that didn't really blow my hair back. Well. if I had hair to blow back anyway :D

I have played several Collings guitars at a great little guitar shop in Aspen Co.
All were fantastic guitars.
There was one though that I was not as impressed with as I was with the rest.
A new set of strings changed that problem.
I can't believe how much sound can come out of their smaller guitars.

I still want to play a Tacoma D-40BS.
My fear though is that I will like it and I can't justify another guitar.
So instead, I think that I will get out my 2005 D-55 and fall in love all over again.

Appreciate your thoughts Terry. My '05 Tacoma-built D40 Richie is my go-to favorite six string guitar. Perfectly suited mate to a cup of Folgers Country Blend and a quiet Sunday morning.

I love to go to Hill Country Music and pick on their beautiful Collings instruments, but the truth is, if I had the money to buy that Collings, I'd instead buy three D40s. I'm jus' sayin...

I too had a '76 D40. Sold it when I picked up a '99 D40. The '99 is a lightweight by comparison and sounds way better. It's one of two daily players, along with the D66.

Terry,

It sounds like you and the D-40 are having a second honeymoon. Congratulations on a love rekindled. Isn’t it great to discover treasure in your own back yard?

Dane :D
