All done with the soldering. I gave in to my obsessive side and basically did nothing but build for the past 20 hours or so. Here are some pics:

I had all sorts of problems with the brass plate. I simply could not get it to take the solder. I got to the point where I tried a heat gun, and even said F-it - and used a blowtorch. Nothing! I emailed Bruce, who wondered if I was having solder problems, and that's when it hit me - I'd been using silver solder that I've had since my audiophile headphone amp-building days (seen in pic). I pulled the wires, scrubbed down the plate so it looks like new, got out the old reliable Kester 40/60 and it worked like a charm.

Testing on the non-flammable garage floor:

When I first tested the power tubes, only one lit up. I swapped their position, and it followed the tube. I swapped them back, and they both lit up. Weird. Could I have somehow caused that?

Here it is ready to rock:

My wife took a picture of me in the garage at 3:30pm playing my guitar in my bathrobe. She said something about Facebook, but I was too busy having fun to care.

The cab is being built. I'll update with more pics when it comes in.

Overall I'm very pleased with the Mission build. The chassis is worth the price of admission alone. The built-in nuts are wonderful, and it looks great to boot.

I would say that this kit is not for an absolute beginner. There are no step by step instructions, and though Bruce will send pics via email download, some of them can be confusing. Bruce is fantastic about answering questions though. I think for me, building the BYOC Champ first was an excellent first amp stepping up into this one.

I also ordered the Paul C. and Humbucker I and II mods, but I'm going to get a feel for the amp stock before I mess with any of that.

I do see a Marshall 18W clone in my future though. :)

Nice work GAD. Seems you have got the amp building bug. :)

Is a third party doing the cab build?

Thanks!

Yeah - I got the cab through Mission. He told me who builds them, but I forgot.

Great job! I built one of the Mission 5e3 kits about 11 years ago. It went pretty well although I had trouble with the brass also. I think I even had to send the chassis back to Bruce for some touch up - some of the ground connections if I recall. I used a cab from Clark amps - it's beautiful but I'm not sure if he still sells them separately.

Trying to figure where the OT is mounted. Is that two outs 4 & 8?

Funny - I have no pics of that. I'll snap some and post. Here's a pic with the power transformer mounted, and the bushing for the OT mounted, but before I mounted the OT. One of the cool features of the Mission chassis is that the OT can be mounted straight or slanted:

Ahh So. Now I see. The two rubber grommeted holes for the OT primary and secondary. I can see the OT in the pic of the chassis bottom side up. Very nice. My next project is a 59 bassman. Planning on building 2 12s into an old stereo speaker cab like I did with my champ and then using 2 outs like you have or put in an 2-4-8 switch in case I decide to build or buy a 4x10 cab later. Setting aside some $$$$$$ now so I can start on the chassis in the fall. What are you using for a speaker/speakers?

Now I understand your question - yes, the two output jacks are 4ohm and 8ohm. I need to label them, but I liked the option of having both since I knew I'd be testing with my 4ohm Bassman cab.

The speaker is coming with the tinted Lacquered cab, which is being built. The speaker will be a Jensen C12Q.

Ain't building amps fun? :)

I'm already looking at what to build next!

I'd love something with this kind of grind that also delivers the cleans... but I've always wanted that real Marshall sound...

You know, I have an Axe-FX specifically so that I wouldn't have a lot of amps. I now have the Axe-FX, a vintage '63 Bassman, a champ and now the 5E3.

I think what I need is a therapist.

You misunderstand.
