This is my Guild/Benedetto X-700. Unfortunately, it appears to be separating and its extensive. Any recommendations on who can repair this. thumbnail (3).jpg

If you happen to be in Florida, Tom Jacobs in the Merritt Island/Titusville area is the favorite go-to Guild luthier for many on this board. You can also ship the instrument to him.

Sorry about that GAD.
Oh no worries at all. I just like to be clear when I change stuff. :)

The post fix was because you replied within the quote so it wasn’t really visible. That happens all the time so I blame the software. :)

The same thing happened to my 2000's SFIV. It actually goes away / gets better with the seasonal change. Haven't bothered to "fix" it yet.

Do you have the finish cracking around the binding on both the front and rear of the body or mainly the front? The reason I ask is the carved top on that X700. The solid top will expand and contract more than a laminate with humidity changes. The wood expands and contracts but the bindijg does not and this can lead to the finish cracks in your photo. I have some similar finish cracks on one of my Guild acoustics and I know it was not stored in it’s case and kept at a consistent humidity level as the previous owner did not have a case for that guitar. Given the solid top I would keep that guitar humidified just like an acoustic guitar. Sorry to hear about the finish issues but enjoy that gorgeous guitar!

My guitars are kept in a room with a humidifier of 40 -50% and a room temp of 68 degrees. Is it better to keep your guitars in their cases with a humidifier? Unfortunately, 2 of my Guild/Benedetto X-700 have had issues with the bindings shrinking, one even had to have the fret board reglued. Thanks to Strange guitar works of New Orleans, they did an excellent job on both guitars!

My Guild/Benedetto Johnny Smith Award is okay (so far). I think @GAD has a Benedetto X-700. Maybe he should check on it.

Is there anything that can be done (clamping, gluing) to mollify the separation effect here?

Doesn't look obvious to me as it's clearly ripping the edge of the wood where the binding is pulling off.

Hate to see this on such a high-end model!

I have a Guild/Benedetto X-700 single humbucker, and a Johnny Smith both from the Fender custom shop Corona CA, there in excellent shape. I have purchased all my guitars used, and online. Who knows how they were treated by their previous owners? I was lucky the previous owners did cough up some $ to fix them.

I'm going to contact Tom Jacobs in the Merritt Island/Titusville, Fl. See what he thinks is the best course of action.

Come on over and check it yourself. I’m busy writing eclipse scripts. Well, I was until I wrote this…

I'm sure this has been discussed to death here on LTG, but I have strong opinions about guitars in cases. Unless I am playing the guitar, it is ALWAYS in a case. I don't worry about whether the case is humidified, but this has to do with my living in Florida where humidity is never a problem as far as guitars are concerned (unless you're air-conditioning the daylights out of your house, which I don't).

Conversely, I have lived in low humidity (Los Angeles) medium humidity in summer and low in winter (Ann Arbor MI) and high humidity summer and low winter now (Wilmington NC). My '72 G37 has lived mostly outside its case in all three locations and has no issues.

Every climate is different, obviously -- I'm in the upper midwest, with strong seasonal temp and humidity changes. I mostly follow the principle that if I'm comfortable, my guitars are fine. I use humidifiers in the house in the cold dry months, and have central air in my house, so staying between 40-50% RH is pretty easy.

I am not at all adamant about keeping guitars in cases -- I have several hanging on the wall at any given time, and only make sure valuable/fragile ones are in cases in closets when I'm out of town, or if there's a major weather event that is going to disrupt power (and thus climate controls).

The only thing I'm adamant about: I don't trust in-case humidifiers, and have seen them do more damage than good. I'm sure they're helpful for some people, but I think they should be used very judiciously, and with more careful attention than I would be likely to follow through on.
