Excellent early morning-first cup reading, so thanks for the link, TJ.
Big Guy Clark fan here.

I was in Houston for a decade that spanned the time that Guy refers to and the Old Quarter was the place to be, just to listen to all that great music. A highlight for me was a very small/intimate show (hardly a concert) with Townes Van Zandt, and If I Needed You just knocked me out!

Good memories, so thanks again,
Joe

Thanks for the link, Teej. Great article. I read it to the sound of jackhammers, which are tearing up the concrete around the pool. Somehow it seems like appropriate accompaniment to the story of those three.....

You can't say enough about either. Thanks for the post. "If I Needed You" just is a song only Townes can do justice.

It was indeed. Here's a link to one of the albums that came out of those Old Quarter sessions.

It was a great place for pure, unadulterated music for groupies like me. :courage:

I have been listening to that album quite a bit lately. There was an article recently about TVZ in Acoustic Guitar Magazine. His followers (mainly Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris) talked about his style and approach to song writing and accompaniment. I am always amazed at the complex yet simple guitar accompaniment he uses in his songs. I recently worked through Rex's Blues as a nice dark song to add to my repertoire.

One of my all-time favorite quotes is from when a fan encountered Van Zandt and she asked him, "Why are your songs so sad?" To which he replied, "My songs aren't sad. They're hopeless."

A great distinction.

Thanks TJ, Guy is one of my favorites and I sing more songs by Townes than any other single songwriter. As far as I am concerned, the only commonly available album that Townes did that is worth having is "Live at the Old Quarter", the others tend to be over produced garbage. Towards the end he had better producers, but he had sadly deteriorated
terribly by that time. His songwriting skills fortunately did not.
I always liked Guy's statement that certainly applies to this article "Its poverty that sets the poet free, I've had all the freedom I can stand".

Hey spidey, haven't seen you in a while. Good to see your post! I love the statement that Guy makes about the friendship between the three of them when he says, "If you want good friends, they're gonna cost you." I think a lot of people have forgotten how that works..... Of course, at the same time I know that defective personalities are drawn together. Not always a smooth road, but it sure makes for some great songs......
