Great post Bill! Nice Guild, and Utah Phillips is cool, too. 8)

I'm a big fan of Ani. But I think Joni Mitchell qualifies as the QUEEN of alternate tunings. Maybe you could make Ani a princess or something. Either way , she's awesome.

I'm with Tom on this one.

She was at her finest here and, of course, I was madly in love with her. And I don't think I was alone in that regard. 8)

But Bill, that is EXACTLY what I think of when someone mentions Joni Mitchell!!!

Some people's Joni is stuck in a time warp. Joe, that IS the reason I went out and bought a dulcimer, though. That reminds me.... it needs new strings.

If you like Joni Mitchell you'll probably like Joni Anderson............ Notice how Oscar specifically mentions that she writes her own material, singer/songwriter not being in the vocabulary at the time.

This reminds me in some ways of Emmylou's early style as well

The early folkie years for both of them.

Urge for Going is one of my all time favorite songs. Just beautiful. She never released it on record I don't believe until her "Hits and Misses" CD in the 90's.

Tecumseh Valley is one of the saddest songs ever written. Beautiful, touching.... and gut wrenchingly sad.

Townes is not exactly known for cheery material, to quote him "Music is either the blues, or its zippity do dah". For some odd reason I like his songs a lot and play more of them than any other songwriter, although "Loretta" is pretty upbeat. Other artists really like his stuff as well, Lyle Lovett does a fine job with "Flying Shoes" and "Lungs",
Nanci Griffiths "Tecumseh Valley" is a classic, as is almost any interpretation by the student Steve Earle, although I especially like his "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold".
Seems to have veered a long way Ani DiFranco and alternate tunings. Sorry for the hijack

There's a quote that's quite memorable. Some woman asked Townes "Why are your songs so sad?" And he replied, "My songs aren't sad, they're hopeless."

I play Loretta often and always introduce it as "a song written by Townes Van Zandt about a perfect relationship". On occasion, I take a little flak for that, but it doesn't keep me up at night.
