Here's one of my all-time favorite eccentrics; a regular one-man band! Name that Guild.

Hello Joe,

John Hartford was one of the first people to play one of the Gruhn-designed Guilds. I believe this is a Guild F-44.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks for that, Joe. May John RIP, he was one of the greats.

**Gentle on My Mind will live forever.

Agree Joe. Absolutely love "Gentle On My Mind" 8)

I seem to remember John and Glen Campbell - who had a hit with this song - performing it together on Glen's tv show back in the day.

Good stuff indeed!

Boy, that brings back some memories!! John used to drive a riverboat up to the local dock on the Ohio River, go over to an open-air ampitheatre at the local park, and do a concert under the warm summer moonlight. Just him, his banjo, fiddle, and piece of plywood. Still remember those nights!

And the F-44, that brings back memories, too. One of the guitars I should have bought but let get away, along with an F-50R I played around that time.

I must be gettin' old.....

Concidently, Gentle on My Mind is a tune I have wanted to learn, and I just downloaded MP3s (both Glen Campbell and John Hartford versions) of it last week. Does anyone have good chords/tab for it? The ones I have found on the web are all G G7 Am Am7 D7 G, and they don't sound quite right to me...
Thx, Dave

I've got a nice version of it in of all things, "The Readers Digest Country & Western Song Book". It's got a barred (5th fret) C chord progression C-Cmaj7-C6-Cmaj7 to a first position Dm-Dm+7-Dm7 G7 C.
I know this isn't a very clear explanation, but it is very simple to play - heck I can play it, so it's not hard :D
If you want to see it, send me a PM and I'll fix you up in the next day or two.
BTW you can find the Readers Digest Song Books (there's several different versions of them) at yard sales and flea markets pretty cheaply and they are fun books to have. They are spiral bound, so they lay flat and offer up a lot of good songs with chord diagrams and simple lead sheets.

Oh man, I love John Hartford. I never knew he had a Guild. Awesome. 8)

I think Gruhn had some of his fiddles and banjos for sale not too long ago.

Gentle on My Mind was the first song I ever sang on a real stage in front of a real audience, probably sometime in '71 or 72.
I've mentioned before that I won a bet by remembering ALL the lyrics.

John often said that this one song provided him with the ways and means to live the rest of his life without worries about money or other mundane matters.

And he left us too soon, :(

I remember when John Hartford came on the scene. I had the album with Gentle on My Mind. I wasn't a huge fan, but I surely enjoyed his music.

Around '78 he was the headline act at a local folk/bluegrass festival. He closed the show on Saturday night. The festival was set up in 2 hour blocks, 15 min. setup and teardown 90 min. performance. Some acts played straight through, others did 2 40 min. sets. John played for 55 min. and walked off stage without so much as a "thank you and good night". A little disappointing, but the music was good. The next year he came back and did the same thing. I mean the exact same songs, jokes and patter. Year 3, he closed on Fri. night, and it was announced in the festival advertising, that he had all new material. Same deal, except for 2 new songs. Year 4 he went on at 7:00 P.M and it was the same as the year before. He never appeared at that festival again.

I'm not trying to slam the guy, I think he had a lot of talent. Most of his fans really didn't seem to mind. I heard that he had problems with the festival organizers. True or not, he took the gig 4 years running, and I found his actions to be unprofessional. It's hard to believe he did this his whole career, I never really paid him much attention after that.

I still like a lot of John Hartford's music, I just wish I hadn't seen him live. :? :?

I really liked John Hartford too. Going all the way back to "Gentle on My Mind". I ran across this video a few months ago and started playing it at Jams. A lot of people have never heard it and ask who recorded it. I tell them Crystal Gale but I'm quick to add "this is the John Hartford version" in case they think it's a girl's song.
