I have bought several things off Reverb. I have made lower offers to sellers that did not have the "Make Offer" selection and the offers have been accepted and as previously stated, the selling fees are lower than ebay.

You haggle in restaurants? That must be interesting to watch. :friendly_wink:

Joe
Right, Joe? I doubt the restaurant staff think it's interesting. Our society isn't set up that way. Bartering for a guitar on an auction site is very different from eating in a restaurant. I like it when I walk into a restaurant and everyone smiles and is glad to see me. :encouragement:

I've made some recent larger-ticket sales on Reverb and it's been a very good experience. Reverb doesn't get near as many potential buyers as eBay but its popularity seems to be growing steadily. As a seller I'm ready to bail on eBay. As a buyer, I'll go either way.

I just tried the opposite approach at my Subaru dealer where I just bought my new Impreza... You guys'll find this interesting.

I kept thanking and complimenting the salesman on the product and all aspects of the transaction as it progressed... test drive, Subaru in general, putting out their best price right from the start. No haggling. I was completely straightforward about how much I hated the Jeep I traded in and exactly what was wrong with in. I towed it into the dealer for evaluation *after* I'd already put down a deposit on the Impreza. As I talked to the used car manager who handles the trade-ins, I was wide open about my problems with the Jeep. Then my salesman asked me what it would take on the Jeep after I'd already towed it in there with absolutely no intention of leaving with it. I said "You guys just do me fair here. I know what it's worth on the car market, but you set the price." They came back with a higher number than I ever would've asked for it.

Sometimes anti-haggling works too. :) :)

Maybe you should send them a link to the Guild bashing on AGF, and they will lower their selling price.

Haha but would it work ?
I'm just looking at eye candy so at the moment prices do not effect me ... Yet ! 😄

Was this before or after your career as a waitperson?
I agree about haggling in restaurants though, I'd hate to be the guy waiting for my check while somebody's angling for a free desert.
With all due respect....just sayin'.

As a former car salesman I can confirm that.
Just being quiet, literally like for minutes, while mulling over the offer can work wonders but of course it's only possible in a "live" negotiation.
The golden rule was "He who speaks first loses", so after making the customer an offer you didn't speak, period, at all.
No matter how long it took.
It could get almost comical at times.
So when I was buying my used BMW about a year ago, the salesperson made a pretty good offer and I was actually contemplating whether to counter with a lower or not when he lost patience and came out with another, lower than I was considering countering with... so I took that one.

Right on the Mark Sal. Ebay is really good for buying but with the Sellers Fees on Reverb about 1/3 the cost of Ebay, I do most of my selling on Reverb. Twice now Ebay has run a promotion to offer Final Value Fees at 3.5% and I've taken advantage of that each time. Because, as you correctly point out, there are many more opportunities to sell on Ebay but I do believe, like you that Reverb is steadily growing and when the word gets out I think they will be taking lots of business from Ebay. Wouldn't it just be a bitch though if Ebay finally recognizes that and goes and buys off Reverb to squash the competition?

Many of the older Guilds need additional work over and above the purchase price. Just depends on how nit-picky you are in regards to fit and finish, string height above the frets, etc.. Add to that the onslaught (avalanche) of the Guild Westerly Collection from China, it becomes kind of hard to justify the Blue Book prices for the older American built Guild guitars. Not too many people understand the difference between the two; truthfully many don't really care. For the price of many of the older so called "vintage" Guilds, you can get a brand spanking new guitar from the Guild Westerly Collection with a full factory warranty. Many with a wider 1 3/4" nut, and wider string spacing at the bridge. I think that asking prices for the vintage Guilds will eventually get drowned out by the lower costs of the Guild Westerly Collection, especially as used Guild Westerly Collection guitars start to show up for sale.

Tommy

Not to bash the "Westerly Collection", cuz I played a couple of 'em, and for what they are they are VERY nice guitars...but they in no way compare to the NH Guilds. Not even close.

I don't care if they flood the market with the imports, they are not going to affect the American-made vintage values to those "in-the-know". Maybe someone would prefer a new import-Guild to a nice vintage American-made Guild, at the same price, especially if they are unfamiliar with the Guild brand and history, but the demand for vintage will remain.

I don't think Epiphones affect the prices of Gibsons all that much. And if a new Epiphone was the same price as a vintage Gibson? LOL!

And the Blue Book value of vintage American-made Guilds is still value-priced compared to Gibsons, at least for the F-50 vs J-200...and I have played a BUNCH of J-200s, new and vintage...and NH Guilds still sound better, to my ears anyway.

I think Reverb is actually better for musical gear than ebay. Reverb is a "musical community", and, yes, its ALWAYS "buyer beware"...but they have protections built-in and you can still check on seller's feedback scores, etc. Yeah, they may ask "high", knowing they make have to take a lower offer. That's just "sales 101".

Thanks for the bartering tips chazmo and adhorshki! I know some people including myself have to fight the urge and not talk too much. It can be hard to do.

RayK, I saw the D55 ad on Reverb. Way high. As a side note, a forensic "statement analysis" of the verbiage on the part of the author would indicate a deliberate attempt at deception regarding the true origin of of this instrument, or as we like to say; he's lying his *** off. Free enterprise is a wonderful thing. Rock on RayK.
