John,

Good to hear from you. As I understand it, the wider ones were indeed for the bridge, but they made wider Franzes only in the early years. And even then sometimes they made a guitar with two of the narrower pups. I didn't know until this week that the wider ones ever existed (or I knew it but forgot). It's on page 30 of the Moust book.

I imagine the Guilders who can really burn on these things have a preference.

Which is better, the wider or narrower spacing? Has anybody tried two wide-spaced Franzes on the same guitar?

I'm guessing it's an almost impossible question... my X-175 has a narrow-spaced Franz in the neck and wide-spaced unit in the bridge... I could switch them (not that I would!), but the pickups themselves might sound different but not because of the pole-piece spacing. On my CE-100DP the spacing is the same. I guess what I'm suggesting is from what I've read (mostly here), is that there was quite a lot of variation in the early Guild/Franz pickups... and nailing down that variation to a difference in pole spacing might be difficult, especially since they made both narrow + wide at the same time. There, I think I just confused myself.
