...That have iPhones and iPads, get iBird Explorer Pro for $.99 ($29.00 off) for a limited time. It looks like a very robust app (and voluminous at 560+mb), and is a lot like carrying around an Audubon guide without carrying the book. I'm not quite as into birds as some of the folks here, but have often wanted to have a reference handy when I see an unusual one. Can't beat the deal for a buck! 8)

My 2 cents:
I've had people on some of my field trips that are so equipped, but I encourage them to turn them off and learn the old-fashioned way.
I also encourage them to leave their field guides in the car and hone their field observation skills.
iBird is handy enough but it's like a crutch and it takes away from an important part of the learning process, IMHO.

Just imagine the birds you might miss while you're thumbing through your field guide or surfing your iBird.

I can certainly see your point Joe, but I think it will prove handy at times for a neophyte like me. I don't see a whole lot of birds in my yard anymore since we got Joey...

But they do pop up occasionally. That ornery Blue Jay is back again this spring, too.

Sandy, is the app for you or Joey?

When Joey's done with them, all you see is a pile of feathers!  I get the feeling the app wouldn't help me much at that point.

Hey Sandy, thanks for posting that link! We were looking at that app but were too cheap to spring for it. At $.99 you can't go wrong! We're still somewhat new at birding so we can use all the help we can get.

Last week we saw three new birds for our life list; (Internet photos)

Chestnut-Sided Warbler:

I have many birds here, in this privileged spot just above a half-mile of undeveloped river and floodplain habitat. I also have mice and packrats. Many have suggested getting a Joey equivalent, but I am just too pleased watching the warblers and sparrows and tanagers and orioles and finches and even the robins at home in my yard and orchard to bring in a predator. Have to deal with the rodents myself to keep the birds. A price well paid.
