Wow, "Timothy," perfect example, I forgot about that one. Maybe the darkest song of that whole era. Some speculated that Timothy was a dog.

Hey, here's one I listened to a million times because that's how many times they played it in 1970-71.

"Indiana Wants Me," R. Dean Taylor

Sorry. “Change“ was also a big hit.

You and I define "big" very differently! :p

"Missing You" was a number 1, "Change" made it to #16 at it's peak. If not for the "Change" video that MTV played so much it probably wouldn't have gotten that high. On the plus side, you made me watch the video, which I remembered - typical 80's outfits! Very entertaining!

As you yourself asked in post #6 about The Plimsouls, "But was it an actual hit?". This is an excellent question for a lot of these songs in this thread. When I stated the thread, I never thought I'd see so many songs I never even heard of! Like the "best rock singer" thread, there's a lot of subjectivity here as to what a "hit" is.

But there's been some great songs posted here that brought back some good memories, so it's a success, IMO.

Did Don Mclean have any other hits than "American Pie"??? If not, that would certainly qualify.

"Starry Starry Night (Vincent)" might qualify as a hit, depending on who you ask. But "American Pie" was a mega-hit!

This thread could easily merge with the Guilty Pleasures thread we must have around here.

Ha! Maybe it's time to merge all threads about songs together! I'm guilty of starting the never-ending "Song Title Thread" that some love and some hate. And now this one. Clearly, I need help...

I am surprised it only made it to #16. It was heavily played on MTV, and is a better song that Missing You, in my opinion. But it certainly was a ”hit,“ even if not a big one. He was also the lead singer of the Babys, which had a hit or 2 of its own.

Despite differing opinions over what constitutes a ”hit” or a “one-hit wonder,” it is fun to revisit the songs of our youth.

Yeah, this has been a really fun thread and although some of the rules have been bent and some absolutely destroyed, it's been fun. I enjoy a lot of these songs. Don't want this merged with the Song Title Thread, because I've vowed to NEVER set foot in that thread again. So this is fine right here and thanks, walrus, for starting it. Here's another favorite of mine:

Castles In The Air was in heavy rotation on WJR Detroit morning radio in the early '70s. J.P McCarthy, famed Detroit radio guy, loved that song. (He was also obsessed with figuring out who Carly Simon was singing about in You're So Vain. 😊 ) This is a later re-recording but IMO it smokes the faster original J.P. played pretty much every morning for months.

Those were the days! When a DJ could decide what to play based on their own tastes, the local fans, etc. No computer generation of play lists based on algorithms and marketing executives.

I love "American Pie" and "Vincent" but between them I think Vincent is actually the better written song. Still, American Pie was about as big a hit as it gets. The internet says Don is worth $50 million! That came mostly from American Pie.
