Re: Facebook warning about Christmas tree app....trojan virus

As someone who occasionally has to support computer users in an Enterprise situation (referring to the size of the organization and not the aircraft carrier or spaceship) I find that more of my workload comes from well meaning individuals who believe every warning that comes their way than from individuals who actually have a virus or some other malware on their computer.

See this for a discussion of the Christmas tree app hoax.

Not to pick on Steffan, but before you pass on one of these warnings, spend 5 minutes to Google it or check with Snopes or your anti-virus vendor before you pass it on and get folks worked up about nothing. Your IT support staff (or the friends who act as your support staff) will really appreciate the extra effort to verify something before passing it on and making it their problem.

I'm sure not the expert, but stuff like that scares me, don't mean to spread my insecurities around...I'm pretty good with changing strings though....

No problem.

Just Google.

For example, the first hit on "Christmas tree app. on Facebook" is Snopes and reading what they say would have let you help yourself. If the first hit were an anti-virus vendor then there might be something to the warning worth consulting with someone about.

Snopes is a great site, I'm such a skeptic I go there all the time to check stuff out. Heck, it's fun just to go to snopes.com and read about all the different hoaxes, as well as some things that are true!
