I did some searching and reading on a lot of the posts on replacing the tuners for the old 12 strings. I am leaning towards the grover mini's and I want to make sure I am looking at the right part/model. Is the 205 series the ones people are referring two...specifically the 205C12 which is the mini tuner that is chrome for the 12 strings. I am not locked into these by any means so any other opinions are appreciated too. I saw the post about the ~ $30 pings too, but I was not sure about the link I found on them. Thanks as always for the help...

thats a great question! I was thinking of posting the same question this morning!

I have a 74 f-112 too- I would like to replace the tuners, but I do not want to drill in the headstock to install enclosed single tuners. I would like to buy a strip, 2 sides of six tuners BUT I don't think PING tuners are very good at all- are there better quality brands like grover or waverly that make exact replacement tuners for 12 strings????

thanks

There has got to be a source out there for 6/side plate-mounts as I've seen several reproductions that use them. For example, the repro of the Oscar-Schmidt Stella 12 string played by Leadbelly and built by Todd Cambio has 6/side plate-mounts. They are definately out there.

National Reso Phonic also makes 12 string resos with 6/side plate-mounts. I believe they source them from Gotoh.

I've also seen many vintage guitars with 6/side plate-mounts that were made by Kluson or were Kluson look-alikes. They're out there. If I can find a source, I'll provide it here.

I replaced the tuners on my 72 F112 with ping. They fit perfectly. The new screws are a little narrower than the original, so stay with the original if you go this way. You can use the old holes. This is the company that makes Ping gold clubs too, and I hear they're pretty good. :) Larrivee and several other companies also go with ping. I find them very smooth, and stay in tune, way better than the old ones, and don't add the excess weight that some people have mentioned. I was quite surprised at the quality for the cost. No complaints. :D You're local music store might have them. They aren't hard to get. Steffan :D

It just occured to me that the Guilds have solid peghead and the link I provided is for slot-head.

You might be able to use the Kluson tuners used on Strats, Teles, etc. These are actually individual tuners, however they are "ganged" together and look like they are all mounted on the same plate. Buy a set of left-hand and a set of right-hand. I own an Epiphone Riviera 12-string electric that uses these tuners.

Steffan, I saw your other posts about the pings and like the sound of that. Can you post a link to the ones that you got. I found some on the web, but was not sure it was the right ones. The shop working on my guitar does not carry ping, but they can get them...FYI, I am getting the bridge reglued and decided to let him go ahead take care of the tuners and do a setup while at it...

Also would like to confirm that the mini grovers i mentioned are the right ones also as an alternative...

I just picked them up at Long and McQuade in our area. They were around $27. I kept the receipt but no thought of returning them. They are like originals except the knobs are a little larger, and not quite oval, maybe squared off a little more. Should be no problem getting them, well worth the price. Put them on yourself, no problem, just pay attention...remove the strings 1st.  Steffan

Overcomer, if you can, please let me know how you like the PING tuners-

I have used them in a friend's guitar and was unimpressed, but if this is all that will fit the f-112 without drilling i want to give them a second look. thanks!

I'm interested in this too. Definitely do not want to do any drilling, but at some point I really need to do something about the tuners on my F112. The high G string tuner is slipping & sliding all over the place so I constantly have to keep an eye on that.

Hey Guys...I spoke with the luthier doing my repairs today. He has a set of grover mini's in stock and he is going to test fit them out first. I couldn't get the pings without a special order and I really wanted to try the mini's. Either way I will let you know how it turns out.
