effects loop?

i dont use effects--yet but im curious to know, as my old reliable crate has one & in the online manual i downloaded & printed for my enjoyment there is nothing on how it operates.
so i come to my friends here because im not afraid to look stupid by asking basic questions:
whats the deal with effects loops?

If the circuit is designed correctly, using effects will not effect the tone if the effects box doesn't have true bypass. I have a couple of older boxes that take all the sparkle out of the guitar's signal even if you aren't using it.
