I'm considering buying a '73 F-40. The seller tells me there is a very soft V to the neck profile. Was this common? If so, it would be the first Guild I've heard of with any kind of V neck. The only other V neck I've played was on a 50's RI Tele, and I hated it. He said it's nowhere near as pronounced as a Tele neck and is very subtle. I'm going to go try it out this weekend, but I'm curious to see what other F-40 owners think.

Soundwise, what do ya'll think of these F-40s? I'd like something bright and detailed with a full sound mainly for country. How is the low end?

Do you remember what the neck felt like in your dreams? Because that could help.

I played a '74 F-40 in a local shop a year or so ago... it had the typical Guild neck shape (is that a "C" neck?). Very comfortable to play, and a nice sounding guitar. I have never heard of a Guild (acoustic) with a V-neck from the factory... my guess would be that it's been modified.

Soundwise, I thought it very similar to my (also maple) G-37 from the same year. Bright, but with a nice smoothness to it. Bass wasn't as strong as a rosewood body... but it's there. I play bluegrass gauge strings (light 1-3 and med 4-6) to emphasize the bass a bit more on my G-37.

I don't know much, but I did play a 70s F30 recently. Its neck was comfortable and similar to the neck on my D25 which feels like a rounded C. It did not feel like anything dramatic such as a Martin V.

My Question is....... does the seller know what he's talking about with regards to the V shaped neck?- (maybe he doesn't know how else to describe it) sometimes people who know a few buzzwords about guitars do more harm than good.

I have a 78 F-30 and there is no V neck- It is a typical rounded U shaped Guild neck- that is skinny by the 1st fret and gets thicker when if meets the top.

good luck!

Hello MrBoZiffer,

Well, I haven't seen the guitar but since there was quite a bit of hand sanding involved, I can imagine each guitar coming out a bit differently. Since the Guild necks of the '70s are not particularly wide I also can imagine someone, who's used to looking at wider Gibson necks, calling it a 'soft V' but I don't think it will be a anywhere close to a V-profile.

Sincerely,

To tell the truth, it felt a lot like my wife's arm. Nicely rounded, no deep V that I could tell.
Go figure!

Thanks for the input guys. Ya'll made a lot of good points. I guess I won't know until I actually try it out. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

Mr. Bo.

I just played at 70's F-50 today. Here's the link ...

https://www.envisionsecure.net/spaceman ... +F-50+1975

It did not look quite so good in person, no cracks that I could see but well worn for sure. I'm used to playing dreads so this "Bluegrass" version did not seem to have the volume that it's name would imply.

The price was knocked down I think. If your really interested I can go and have another run at it. Would gladly help in the purchase and / or shipping if you're really interested.

Thanks for the offer, I'll give it some thought. That's a gorgeous guitar though... at least, it's photographs well.

I think I really need to try something out for myself. In the past year, I've made a few purchases without playing them first and they didn't end up so well.
