Would someone/anyone care to remind me of the exact meaning of the date stamped on the inside/underside of the soundhole? Is it the actual date of the finished product or is the date stamped at some other time during the process?
I'm curious to know because it seems to change my view on dating my guitars.

Something to ponder on a Sunday morning, while attempting to avoid working on my roof.

Hello Joe,

The date that you find on the inside/underside of the top near the soundhole is the date that the soundboard was completed in the body shop. It is not the manufacturing date of the guitar.
It usually pre-dates the final manufacturing date of the instrument by a couple of months to as much as a year, depending on the popularity of the model. Consequently it's not a good way of dating your guitar but it will at least give you a date from which you can draw the following conclusion: 'Your guitar is definitely not older than the date that's stamped on the inside of your guitar'.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

i have three different dates on the inside of my 1991 d-40. one is on the neck block , another on the inside top , and another on the back brace on the inside , if they built my guitar on a regular basis , threw out the year , given the quantity they made for that year ,according by the serial number , if i divided the number of guitars for that year , divided by the number of months and kept breaking it down, would that pin point exactly when it was built for that year , because if you could , the date on my neck block comes within two days of my calculations , any input on this hans ?

GMC,

I don't know about Hans, but you just gave me a headache, right between the ears!

No, but I'm curious how far apart these various dates are, since by the time your guitar was made, the model was about to be discontinued. Maybe you could let me know. Use a PM if you prefer not to post the serial number.

yes hans i'll send you a pm. as for killdeer43 , let me explain it a little better for you , if you took the total number of that particular model they made for the year , if they made them one right after the other , hopefully , then you can break it down when it was built , .i hope that was a little easier to understand gmc

gmc,
Thanks, but no explanation necessary. I was merely attempting to add a bit of levity to the thread. Doesn't always work, apparently.

Cheers,
Joe

Yeah, Joe, my eyes crossed from gmc's post too. :) I think "threw out" was meant to be "throughout". That "through" me off. :D

Three dates stamped inside. That's interesting. I guess that's the precursor to RFID tagging... I wonder if the new factory is using RFIDs? If the factory tour comes through, we can ask them if they keep tabs on the manufacture dates of all the components.

None taken, and I have a good supply of ibuprofen set aside for special occasions.

Take care,
Joe
