Thanks, Dave. I was just wondering that very thing. Three piece backs are relatively common on Martin and Taylor. Guild? Not so much.....

Are the necks ash also? Doesn't look like mahogany or maple in any of these pictures. I wonder if this is the only Guild acoustic with a neck like that.
Good eye! Good Question! HANS?!?!

I'm not Hans, but yes, the necks are also ash. I think the older ones with rosewood centerpieces are the only 3-piece backs on a Guild acoustic... if you want to call it that.

Thanks, Dave! I consulted Gruhn's guide last night, and the ash neck is mentioned. I didn't see any others with ash necks (but I didn't do an exhaustive search). I also think you might be right about the 3-piece back (I don't think that was mentioned in Gruhn's, by the way) and the D-46 being the only one that had one. Neat!

[edit: Oh, I should make a point that while Martin sees fit to include a 3-piece back as part of the specs for their 35 series, Taylor just does 3-piece backs on a whim if they really like the wood. I.e., Taylor doesn't have a specific model designation that designates when 3-piece back is used. Thus, it's possible that Guild didn't indicate it when models (like the D-46) might've had a 3-piece back. I'm not saying there were any, I was just noting the possibility that there could be some out there.]

I should clarify... as obvious in some of the pics posted, the D-46 neck was a three piece neck, with ash and a mahogany center stripe

Agreed! With Guild, you never know what might be out there...

Just to add to the feedback on that, I can't recall ever seeing another 3 piece back out there either. In fact I remember noting that to myself the first time is saw a pic of one a few months back.

I was wondering if anyone here could post a good sound clip of the D-46, for those who don’t know what there missing?
I would gladly do so if I had a way to do it. A little fuel for the GAS as it were.

Just kidding you krysh! I said it before and I’ll say it again, you did a great job! 8)

Yes, that is, of course, our own krysh. Michael is a much better player and (sound tech) than me. But I have a few songs recorded with my D-46 posted on my soundclick page (here's one... I think I have at least one tune with each of my Guilds, save the D-50). For fingerpicking, I find the D-46 easier to balance in a recording, relative to my rosewood dreads (which end up too boomy).

That D-46 really sounds good. And they all look fantastic! Being completely made of ash, are they any heavier than other Guilds (which are sometimes pretty heavy, anyway)?

As I recall, my 46 is my heaviest, at 5#15oz (weighed on the kitchen scale)... with my D-55 a close second at 5#14oz. That's nearly 1-3/4# heavier than my lightest, which is my D-35.

Nice to see all those nice D46s. Mine is #DL100319, made in '81 or '82, can't remember right offhand and I'm too lazy to walk upstairs and look.

As for the 3-piece back, I heard it explained like this: Guild would build the 2-piece back with the strip of inlay (like mine) if the two pieces of ash were sufficiently wide. If the ash wasn't quite wide enough, they would add a strip of rosewood so as not to waste the ash.

Can't remember where I read that, but it makes sense. Also, it would explain the varying widths of the rosewood that you see. Either way, they are dymamite guitars. It was a lucky day when I stumbled across mine, and I'm glad I grabbed it.
