A guitar is only worth as much as the next guy is willing to pay for it, which I imagine still holds true especially in this weird, weird Economy.

Last weekend, there was a '66 F20 fore sale down in OC, for $600. No photographs, just a brief description. I saw it and shot off an email, as I'm partial to '60s Guilds...also '50s through '90s Guilds......but I digress.

That guitar must have sold within a few hours, as I never got a reply. A little later a thread appeared here on LTG mentioning that same guitar, from over on the AGF describing what a find it was.

Imagine my interest in an ad this morning on CL here in LA of the same guitar which had, miraculously almost tripled in value in just a week....as it was a $600 guitar....it's now a $1775 guitar.

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/msg/2054145367.html

I can see taking a little profit for your trouble and time, this guy had to drive from Dana Point to Huntington Beach, about Five Bucks in gas.....wait, it's Dana Point, a pretty upscale neighborhood....let's allow Eight bucks. And maybe he wiped it down to get the dust off of it.... Talk about buying low and selling high? It's a nice guitar....but is it that nice?

Reminds me of the ads I see on Gbase from dealers who
want $2900 for a garden variety, '75 212XL. Any comments?

I prefer to refer to it as the "free market" and Guilds.

Did he actually GET the $1775 yet?

Capitalism that is speculative is pipe dreaming, until it sells.

Must have gotten tired of "Flip This House," or went broke.

The ad appeared early this morning.

Mojo,
Yes....the "Free Market"..I've heard of that....isn't that where the Chinese Gov't, those Lovable Reds,...artificially support and devalue their currency, allowing their Ameican Lackey (haven't got to use that word since the late '80s!) .....Walmart to sell you said Chinese Products at prices so low that no one, especially American companies can compete? That Free Market?

It will only have tripled in value if the guy sells it.

It's a great find, wish I had snagged it. I probably would have tried to sell it at a much more reasonable price.

Oh, well...the one that got away? I don't think I would have sold that guitar, as it appears to be near mint and would have been a nice little fingerstyle instrument.

It will be interesting to see what it eventually sells for. That $1775 F-20, might be a $1200 F-20 in a month...but, hey some Newport Beach Hausfrau might buy it as the perfect Xmas Gift for Her Special Guy....

... or a Newport Beach Hausherr ... There was a time here on LTG when 'flippers' and 'dealers' were considered dried out sweat scum on the lower bout for their role in driving up the cost of used Guilds. I guess the abuse ended when LTGers figured out that they too could make a buck or two.

Capt'n,
A reasonable 'Buck or Two...is one thing...but One Thousand One Hundred And Seventy-Five Bucks....is a lot of Bucks and elevates you onto a different level that has you humming Mr. Winwood's..."Back In The High Life Again"...

Capn't, I kind of think this Economy has made a few of us re-evaluate the nice F-50R that was purchased for $400 in 1975... that has increased in value a bit....and want, or in some cases need to take advantage of the situation.

And of course it's going to attract Guys.. who are not all that interested in playing the guitars....but see them as just one more Widget to buy and sell.

Veer alert and not to try to start anything but that's actually government subsidizing that perverts the whole thing. And it doesn't make it right when we do it either.
What we really ought to do is start pegging the price of wheat to the price of oil. The world needs our food more than we need their oil, or anything else.
OK done with editorial.

I prefer to call it the free market rather than Capitalism, which was a term coined by Marx and meant to be negative, as in anyone with capital and capital being evil. I apologize for making my comment to begin with but I always refer to "capitalism" as the free market due to Marx's use of the word. Moving along.
