Oh joy. I can't wait until next September 23, so I can ignore the fact that it's Bruce Springsteen Day here in NJ. :rolleyes:

I've been listening to Bruce since his first album, and of course, he's legendary here, but it doesn't hide the fact that he's supposedly an extremely difficult guy to deal with, according to a few people I know who have either worked with him for years, or know him. Sometimes, it seems like almost everybody in the music business in New Jersey has met Bruce. Except me.

At this point, I have my favorite Bruce tunes, but I've grown weary of his "everyman" posturing, especially after he OK'd charging exorbitant ticket prices for this tour. He controls every aspect of his tours, down to the last detail. The working class hero is worth millions.

I used to work for a man who'd seen Springsteen 67 times. I saw him once, in '84, on the Born In The USA tour, and that was sufficient.

Here's a Springsteen story. I work with a guitarist who lives in Long Branch. He has a very pretty wife who is a doctor. Springsteen used to show up at her gym to work out, and usually managed to get on the exercise machines right next to her every time. She was so creeped out, she quit that gym and joined another one. What do you think happened? Springsteen started showing up at that gym also.

My Springsteen story;

I started college in Richmond, VA, in 1971. The first couple days were devoted to orientation, getting class shedules, dormitory assignments, and so on. After days of running around, filling out forms, waiting in lines, etc., the college held a free concert for the newly arrived students.

The show was in the college gymnasium, and the act they'd hired was Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks. I was a big Hicks fan and me and my new roommate got there early, grabbing a spot on the floor of the basketball court near the stage.

The lights went down, a guy with long greasy hair comes to the mic and announces, "You're going to be hearing a lot from this next performer. His first album is coming out on Columbia Records in a week. Please welcome . . . Bruce Springsteen!"

Polite applause. No one had ever heard of him.

After his second song, I turned and whispered to my new roommate, "That guy is going absolutely nowhere."

Even then, I had my finger right on the pulse of popular culture.
