Hello - I have a 1975 D35 which I bought new in 1976. I have had no problems with it until this evening. I was putting on a new set of strings. When removing the 6th string (E) bass I noticed the center post of the tuner was loose.

The tuner have never been a problem ..until tonight. The center post came loose as I was unwinding the old string. The post has screw threads in the bottom and I can see a small black screw it needs to screw into inside the bubble closed tuner.
Problem is I can not get ithe post to screw onto the screw inside the closed tuner.
The threads inside the post do not appear to be stripped.

Has anyone had this problembefore? It there a method or process to line up the post with the screw ?
and if so does the post screw in clockwise or counter clock wise to engage the screw?
appreciate any the help and advise. I'd like keep and use the original tuner and more especially play my guitar.
thanks in advance

The low E on a righthander will turn anticlockwise to tighten the string ; so , turn the string capstan post clockwise ( the direction the string will pull back ).
This is what I'd try first , if you haven't already done this .
