Spend time with them. I've heard people say "I don't spend much time with my kids, but when I do, I make sure it's quality time." That's just a load of hucky-pucky as far as I'm concerned. You can't manufacture quality time, but it will happen spontaneously if you spend quantity time with them.
There’s quite literally a song about the negatives of not making time for the kids.

"I'm Gonna Be Like You Dad" is one - may not be the one you are thinking of Rambozo96 but one I remember.
JohnW gave us the correct title, "Cats in the Cradle."

I think it was about a spoon salesman/pet store owner that had no time for his son? Not sure.

When mine were young and said "I can't do this" (whatever this was) my first response was "Have you tried?", along with I will help you do anything you to try, but I will not do it for you. Also when starting something (particularly a paper / report of some type) I always said "Just write something down. You can always change it". Some part of it worked as one has two Masters (one in law), and the other has a PhD.

At the risk of seeming a little sad, I just have always felt that this song expresses the kind of grief which I never, eve want my children to feel. As such, I'm pretty big on open communication...
