In a thrift store this summer, I picked up two sizeable boxes of 78s from the 1920s and 30s for $40.00.

I am slowly working my way through listening to them.

Among them is this very weird 1932 novelty record by Ben Bernie, What? No Mickey Mouse? The song was composed by the major contributor to the Great American Songbook, Irving Caesar.

One Youtube presentation of the song has this comment: "'What! No Mickey Mouse?' This was a popular saying in the 1930s to express displeasure of a movie house not playing a Disney cartoon before the main feature."

Hmmm.... definitely, yes ... but I wonder .... Bernie, who sings the song, doesn't really stick to Caesar's lyrics ... although he does follow along with Ceasar's intentions, in part, I think.

Bernie plays the fictional band leader Jack Conrad in the 1935 movie, Stolen Harmony. He's the guy smoking the cigar the beginning of the Youtube clip below. Cool tour bus!!!
