To be honest, the bear looked to be just keeping the the bigger dog away from the cubs. I doubt it was going to try and snack on the tiny dogs. A Coyote, yes. Many a story around these parts of lap dogs being snatched by Coyotes.

I'm not so sure of the no danger thing. Even an unintentional clawing by one of these guys can be pretty severe. I'd like to think I'd have done the same thing but you never know until you're faced with that. I still say that young girl showed a lot of courage (and love) for her pups.

Honestly, I wouldn't have gone out there and confronted that bear, unless I'd taken a leaf out of the dinning room table!! They can knock a bear right out of existence!! Not that I know, but I believe it's true......

A co-worker was working in his garden when a bear snatched his small dog. He went after the bear with a shovel and managed to save the dog and run off the bear.

I think there is a generational thing going on here. We were staying with friends and family at the southern end of Lake Tahoe. Bears were obviously frequently seen in the area, if the armored garbage cans were any indication. A bear comes wandering up to the patio on the other side of some sliding glass doors. The older adults jockeyed for position inside where they could see the bear but otherwise had something between them and the bear. The younger adults, most of whom were children of the older adults, all ran to another door, went outside and converged on the patio, keeping some distance but not at all concerned about the bear.

About a week ago I was strolling through a local park with my labrador retriever when a BIG DOG - looking like danish dog - came over a fence and straight way towards my dogd throat. Somehow I instinctively offered my foot to him and yelled like crazy - luckily got him away - - -

Later i was so filled with adrenaline 😂 - suppose my dog Jymy was like "what's up doc?" 😂

There was not a second to think of alternatives. In aftermath - that dane could've severely damage my foot in case he'd be that kind.

Maybe my behaviour might be explained by - love ?

I saw that young lady interviewed on TV this morning. She seemed very sweet, gentle, and had a lovely smile.

If she were part of my high-school class, I would have voted her "least likely to successfully challenge a bear on the patio".

A sow with cubs is nothing to take lightly. She would take on a bear twice her size in an instant if she thought the cubs were in any danger. The teen girl is foolish maybe but definetely brave and lucky, and I expect succeeded because of a number of factors - 1) the cubs were already retreating, 2) Moms balance on the wall was questionable, 3) mom was partly distracted by the dogs, and partly distracted by "where did my cubs go?". You can bet she was fueled by adrenaline at the time. Pretty much just as crazy as the guy a few weeks (months?) back that took on the alligator to save his puppy. Sometimes we humans act first and think later..... and save a life because of it.
