I was kicking around the internet when to my amazement I discovered this photo. I don't think he ever played a Guild live or in the studio (usually played a modified ES-150), but still very cool. For those that have not seen this pic, enjoy!

Thats really cool showing Barneys fingers blurring across the fingerboard while the other cats hitting harmonics on the Gibson. That woulda been something to see and hear  8)

It was a modified ES-350 that he played. It had a Charlie Christian pickup and a replaced fingerboard among other modifications.

Cool pic. I was surprised to see him playing in a scene from a Perry Mason episode from the early 1960's.

I met Barney when I lived in San Diego a number of years ago. I took lessons from a really great jazz guitarist who was good friends with Barney named Art Johnson. We all asked Barney why he didn't have the Gibson logo at the top of his modified Gibson!? He said that it basically went back to a money endorsement dispute at the time with Gibson Guitars which is not surprising...........jim in Maine

The guy on the right is looking enviously, I can see him smacking his head a la V8 commercial. "I could have had a Guild!" Either that or he's wondering where he can get a neck scarf like Barney's. :)

Thanks for posting that photo ! I've got many of his albums and film-clips on DVD.
It was so sad that he had a debilitating stroke . Like Wes and Burrell , he was instantly recognisable
on record.

Cool pic, looks like a guitar shop or show with all those cases around.

Forgive me if you've seen me ask this before and for derailing this thread but...

Anybody know if Barney Kessel ever owned/used a Fender Super? I've got a '61 that has one of those blue dymo labels on it that says "Kessel" and has a stamp from a store in Arizona. It has a factory ss rectifier instead of the stock 5AR4. I've always been curious.

I've never seen it mentioned, but that doesn't mean he never did.

As for the Guild in this pic, it's a much nicer burst than the Gibson (IMHO).
