If my memory serves me correctly from my meteorology/climatology courses in college, I think that's called a "mackerel sky"

OK, what do I win?

God, that's beautiful, whatever it's called. Thanks for sharing.

We had a sunrise here this morning in Massachusetts that was breathtaking. Wish I"d had a camera.

Some say all this is by chance, it's just percentages. Looks like good design to me  Anyway, I have no idea what those clouds are called, but a beautiful pic none the less

Cirrus clouds?
I don't even know if I'm Serious about the Cirrus.

Pretty though. Looks like a Hallmark card. Thanks

I'll second Mackerel sky, but that might be a New England colloquialism. It looks like there might also be a lenticular cloud in there as well, hard to see because of the bright spot.

At first I thought there was a lenticular cloud as well, but I think thats the hole in the formation where a cloud isn't.

Lenticular clouds, indicate high winds aloft which may come down to the surface (and ruin your afternoon in the woods at the fire)...S-290, Intermdiate Fire Behaviour

Bill, you came the closest, in noticing that there's a hole. This is called a "hole-punch" cloud.

It's pretty rare. I've only seen it once before. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mob/?n=hole_punch

Dr. Patterson would be proud of me...

Mid-term, each test has a code, several images of clouds are put up on the screen, depending on the code you have you identiy a particular image as to what it is...

I get a tree line with white sky...what the hell was that?
Passed the exam, but never did find out what I was supposed to identify...

But once in fact did see (with Dr Patterson as it turns out), a whole bunch of lenticular clouds approaching like an armada of flying saucers...and of course we were doing a prescribed burn with the class in a game preserve...needless to say, class got out early... :D

Well, yah, it's that cloud formation named after the satellite radio station isn't it?
