Back around 1990 or so, my band The Mighty Young Fish, were doing our regular weekly gig at The Bayou in Bellmore, NY. As we were getting ready to go on for the 2nd set, a woman who had been sitting eating dinner with her husband, came up and told us how much they enjoyed our music, and told us that her husband played a "little" guitar. We said cool, and asked if he would like to sit in with us. I knew after a few bars, that I was playing with a monster, but I didn`t know until we played the whole set, that I had been backing up the great Hubert Sumlin. A great, great player and a truly humble gentleman. Thanks for one of the greatest nights of my musical career. RIP.....

Jeff

I'm heartbroken; and why I am I only learning of this now? Mainstream news has no idea what's important! Hubert Sumlin has long been a music hero to me. Howling Wolf was one of my favorite singers, guitarists, harp players and songwriters almost from as soon as I found my own musical preferences, and Hubert was, by Wolf's reckoning, an essential part of his sound for what, most of 20 years, until Wolf's death?. Still playing in his 70's as greatly as 50 plus years ago, even right after having a lung removed.

And, Jeff, that really IS an awesome story.

Awsome story, Jeff. And it looks like Hubert was playing a Guild in that second clip. 8)

Cool guy - one of my favorites in a Kenny Wayne Shepherd DVD called "10 Days Out", I think. Kenny Wayne did a ten-day roadtrip, playing with a bunch of great blues musicians along the way. BB, Hubert, & Pinetop Perkins were among the luminaries featured in that movie.

and this is the first I've heard of Hubert Sumlin as well  :(
I never saw anything in the Denver Post either  ,
maybe I didn't look hard enough.
He was a guitar icon to me... RIP Mr. Sumlin.
