I just picked up this little 22-watt blow torch...

boogie.jpg

It's (obviously  ) a "Studio .22+" model from about 1990, with the optional graphical EQ section. Built like a tank, but has been sitting unplayed for about 5 years. It's really clean cosmetically, but needs a good cleaning of the electronics, pots, etc. So this is a little project for me.

I'm thinking that maybe with some careful pre-amp tube selection I can tame it a bit and find some useful tones. If not, I think it should flip pretty easily.

They are very nice amps. One of the first more modern amps that used EL84 power tubes. The + version, with the separate lead master, was a big improvement over the standard Studio 22.

Hi Dave,
I used to have the standard Studio .22 version... if you do decide to flip it see if you can throw it all the way here to the other side of the pond, I'd be happy to give it a good home assuming the freight isn't totally silly :D

Killer amps!

I had an '89 from 1991 to 2007. I sold it whan my son was ill...I'm glad to have my son around, but I do miss that amp!

They are tough on power tubes. About 400pv and they're biased HOT! The Sovtek EL-84M is a durable and inexpensive tube. The Saratov(?) 6n12n-EB is a great and rugged tube as well. You can also re-adjust the bias by replacing a resistor

I was running a couple GE 5751 in the pre-amp. Low microphonics and slightly reduced gain. The pre-amp tube layout is funky...the tubes are not "in order" That is, the 1st pre-amp tube the guitar signal see's is actually in the "V2" position. Note that Mesa likes to use DC heaters in the early pre-amp stage(s)

The effects loop jacks often get corroded and make a low output/no output issue. You can often put a cord in the jacks and it will clear it up. I prefer to just replace the jacks.

Do not spray the EQ sliders with de-ox-it (or anything else!). It will dilute the viscious grease that's in them. If they are scratchy, just cycle them a whole bunch.

Here was mine, with a Weber "Blue Dog" speaker installed

Thanks for the info, Russ. I'm embarrassed to say that I read it about half an hour after I sprayed Deoxit into the eq sliders.

Do you think some electronic lube would be ok, or should I try to get a bit of grease in there?

Do you have any idea why my logo plate is bottom-right instead of top-left? It looks like its always been there.

You can get tuner cleaner and lube at Rat Shack. Works fine and you get that instant gratification.
