Maybe it was re-topped?
Or maybe a few 25's got the spruce top at the end of 72...?
I thought it didn't happen until 73 though. Monsieur Hans?

Seems odd. Notice the label just says "D-25" with no additional designation?

Sure looks like somebody has played the crap out of it, though.

That s/n is actually pretty low for a '72. Would this place it early in the year rather than later?

Dave :D

The tuners have been replaced. That crack in the back still looks bad, even though it was supposed to have been fixed. I think I would want a D25 with an Arched Back and original tuners. All in all $255 is not bad. I guess we'll see what happens in 6 days.

Does this D25 really have a spruce top?! The description says it's spruce, and it kind of looks like it in the photos....

Hello so_ber,

Yes, that's a spruce top but I don't really want to say anything definitive about a guitar that I'm not actually holding in my hands.
1972 would be early for a 'spruce topped' D-25 but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
The guitar has had quite a few repairs and it looks like they were done by somebody who knows what he is doing.
Neck set and replica bridge are the most obvious ones.
The one thing that puzzles me though is that I have a D-25 with exactly that same serial number in my database but in my database it is listed with a mahogany top. I'm not 100% sure what that means. Duplicate serial numbers do exist but it's a little weird when you come across a guitar that really shouldn't exist and it has a duplicate serial number at the same time.

At this point I'm thinking towards a possible scenario in which two (probably partly damaged) guitars were made into one.
D-25 neck and D-35 body???????? Who knows!

But since I don't get payed for this kind of stuff, you should figure this out yourself! Good luck!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

very interesting! i didn't know you could just swap tops like that.... now that i look at it though, it does look like a D35 top, including the rosette. i was just curious though, i wouldn't want to buy it, especially if it ain't stock, haha!

Hello so_ber,

Actually I was thinking of a D-25 neck on a complete D-35 body!
