Does anyone know how many DE-400 guitars from 1965 where made in black. The only ones I see on the internet are the Blonde and the sunburst. The one I have says DE-400 Black on the label inside the guitar. Also the pick guard is missing and I am trying to find one.

Thank you. I tried to figure out how to do that, But failed. It may not look great, but it sounds great. I just ordered some new strings for it. I have looked all over the internet and can not find another black DE400. Someone played the heck out of this one because the paint on the neck is worn through to the wood. And you can see the stripe on the neck.

Wow, that's been played! Sure it's the original finish?
Walter, are you saying that while you know the label says 'DE-400 Black', you are wondering if it has been refinished black as well?

Any idea on what the value of this guitar would be?
Not that it's for sale.

These where the best I could do. I tried 3 different cameras and the best one for this was my cell phone.

The "Black" seems to be in a different handwriting (i.e. not cursive), and also darker than the rest of the label. Walter was asking (I think) because we've never seen one in black before.

That is a very cool color, you just have us curious!

This is a job for Hans...

He already sent me a message and said "So far I've seen DE-400s in Sunburst, Blonde, Cherry and Black, but not that many in Black"

Ah, so we are back to your original question of "how many in black?". "Not that many" at least means you know it is pretty rare. I really like how the finish has faded!

And you have said it sounds great, which is not surprising, and really is the only important thing!

There is hardly any paint left on the neck. It is down to the wood, You can see the stripe of the neck. Sounds great with a bit of tremolo, and playing "Rebel Rouser".
