I have a 1963 M20 with the plastic headstock overlay. It has a flat/satin finish. The rest of the M20 is satin finished of course but I assumed the headstock wouldn't be.Ive owned old Hoboken F30s and guess I expected the same look.Just figured someone here would know.Thanks.

I've seen several Hoboken-era Guilds in which the finish on the headstock is matted (I owned a '68 F212-XL with this).

I'm not sure if the factory did this or someone else after the fact, but I suspect it had to do with some performers wishing to avoid the reflection of stage lighting. This would have been particularly notable during TV performances.

Patrick Sky's Guild here (an F50-R?) I assume was made with these modifications at the factory ... because this particular guitar is not only matted on the headstock and entire finish, but also is missing all inlays on the fretboard (another element that could cause unwanted reflections):

*Patrick Sky had some kind of endorsement deal with Guild, based on this ad:

Interesting that "Sound Rocket" mike appears to be an AKG D202 ... I used one to record about half of my recent record, great mike and very peculiar design.

A D-58 HARP-MIKE! That's a first for me! Aluminum back and sides? Doesn't exactly look like a dreadnought! :D :)

Heh! :) What's that one, Ralf? Another microphone?
Yes, that's what Donny mentioned, the AKG D 202, which AKG as well as Guild called "Sound Rocket".

Funny to see the AKG name written with the full company name: (Hersteller = Manufacturer)

And sorry to the OP M-30 for the veer!

Can anyone with an early 60s M20 tell me if headstock is satin finished or gloss?

Thanks donnylang.I thought this might be the case.I knew the earlier pre plastic headstocks with gold airbrush logos were matte but didn't remember ever seeing the later plastic finished that way.
