Guitars Center, Musician's Friend and Music & Arts are all owned by the same parent company.

From here:
Heading into the 21st century, The Guitar Center experienced incredible expansion. For example, in 1999, they purchased e-retailer Musician's Friend to offer a robust online option to musicians. And in 2005, they acquired Music & Arts, now the country's largest educational music source providing instruments, lessons and everything musical for students, parents and educators.

That explains much, IMO about Music & Arts locations and what they do, and don't stock.

I believe the online store and the brick and mortar stores are separate business entities.

Clarify, please. Are you talking about Sam Ash? If so I'm not finding anything that supports the claim although that just means I am looking in the wrong places.

Yes, Sam Ash - Similar to Musician's Friend and Guitar Center I suppose. I don't recall why I know/think that, but I seem to recall trying to either get something from the online store in a B&M store or trying to get a website price in a store and was told that they're different entities. Someone in this thread from another site says the same thing but that was in 2001.

All the Googling I do now only shows up "Closing all stores" stories and I don't know how (or have the energy) to look deeper into it.

Also Woodwinds Brasswinds, AVDG (for video, audio and lighting needs) and Strings and Beyond. Hard to avoid, but I support Sweetwater, Strings by Mail and Just Strings if only to prevent the GC megapresence from complete dominance. Also used our local Sam Ash regularly, although not as often as I might have.

That would explain GC's recent alleged focus on higher end gear. I've never seen more than a student model at Music & Arts.

Do you have Music & Arts Center stores? They seem to be the go-to for school/instruction needs around here. I’m now thinking Sam Ash could never compete w/ them in the DC/Balt area. They are everywhere, and could probably survive on 1/2-3/4 sized instruments and band/orchestra sheet music alone!

Don't know, but I had to use a store that had an account with the state, so that was Sam Ash or GC in my area.

just went to sam ash website, and i'm not seeing anything that would qualify as a deep discount. just one guitar down from 15K to 13K. My thinking is they drop ship, so if u order something from the website before May 30 (final sale, no returns), they will take your money and the system is still alive for what will result in the product arriving at your door. But you are going to pay the same as any other website, so that would make zero sense with the final sale/no returns and full retail price. The deep deals are in the stores.

And that is likely the reason SA brick and mortars could never honor the onine prices. That was not their business model, as most online orders went straight from a warehouse that SA did not own, to the customer (there were exceptions).

I once bought a new guitar from Sam Ash, that was a floor model, but still I was the first owner and it was sold as 'new' with warrantee, setup plan etc. They were also selling the same exact instrument (the one I bought- same serial number) as 'used' on their website, for the same price (right when I bought it, that dissapeard). So they had their way of doing things, but SA was never an internet dominator, and I expect the website to be down on June 1, but I do not know.

is noteworthy that other big box music stores that do honor online prices, and generally do things a little differently...are not necassarily turning a profit (GC)...SA is an oldschool family biz...no profits means party is over.

The one in Huntington is ancient history, must have been part of that first wave. I moved to Town in 1980 (I was 3), want to say it was there the whole time until now- very close to that, if not so.

I didn't realize Sam Ash was a big nationwide chain store. I thought they were like Elderly, a single store with an online presence. In all my travels, I've never actually seen a Sam Ash store.

That's wild. I can think of six that I've been to in NJ and NC.

Well, it may be twisted because "Las Vegas" and the entertainment whatever.... but two GC's and one Sam Ash..... and that's with a population of about 2.8 million in the valley. So I'm not sure this is a hit. There are specialty shops here, but they're all awful. When I wanted my Breedlove Oregon Rogue.... went into one of them and told them what I wanted. They were like... we have these that are made overseas. Uhmm yeah but I'd like to support local business.... so could you. "They're not available." Uhmmm, sorry I just talked to the factory and...

They didn't care. You'll have to give us $1500 deposit, non refundible.... and I said, I can buy it online and they were like ... "Do it please.... is there anything else?" Nope.... I left. Then TX found me a crushed box from ... UHMMM I think it was Sweetwater... and i called them and got a great deal. 3 days later I had my guitar. You have to worry about how do these people stay in business??

Even Guitar Center was like.... WHAT DO YOU WANT?? Uhmm, this guitar? same drill....

Manny's, Sam Ash and the rest ruled 48th street back in the day. It was our mecca. The place to go to drool over all the great guitars, pedals and more. And even buy one or two if you had the coin. And so many greats and not so greats who past through their doors. Their photos and autographs posted on the walls. And the Huntington Ash was where back in 78 I traded in a Peavey amp for a 62 Blond Fender Tremolux head which I still have. On a somewhat related note, anyone here remember Gracin's?

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, A time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you

Never have been in a Sam Ash. None in Oregon, and have never run into one while traveling. On the other hand, there are plenty of GCs up & down the I-5 corridor.

I'm with @Roland. I have never seen or been in a Sam Ash store. I had heard of them but only in contexts that made me think they were a local NYC business that had grown to several more locations in the NYC region.

I think I was only ever in the one in Huntington (a lot), and midtown NYC (once or twice).

the Huntington one was top tier (thank you, @louisjames for confirming it was there since at least 78).

There was one in Nassau that was also very good, maybe Westbury or Carle Place or somewhere around there. I should see if they are still open until June 1.

been to one in Jersey somewhere also. They were ok. one guy was a clown (as such I was blatantly lauging in his face as I walked out the door)

I think it was Carle Place. There was a Circuit City in the same shopping center if I'm remembering correctly. Another place that comes to mind and where I got my first set of 'good' speakers was Audio By Zimet on Northern Blvd. right before you hit Spinney Hill. And of course My Fathers Place and then one of two Scobie Diners on the way home after the show.

One here in N. Cincy. , and a GC in the same shopping center, not 300 yds. away.
Sam Ash Store has quite a few LONG time employees that were very knowledgeable and who would work with you to find you the right stuff. Feel bad for those long-time staff members.

The Sam Ash store here also was always a good place to get decent offers for equipment you wanted to trade in, especially if you put what they'd pay you toward credit on new gear from them - an option which automatically bumped up the dollar value of your trade-in items.

Over the years, I purchased 3 acoustics from them, and probably quite a bit of peripheral gear ( pedals, amps, amp stands, mic stands, tuners, picks, mixers, etc.). Always sad to see another "brick & mortar" store go away, as it was good to check out what they had and kill some time in the acoustic room. When they moved away from stocking any Guilds in-store, I didn't visit very often.

Paul at the 34th Street location in NYC is a real luthier (sans attitude) who's always been kind and available for inspections and advices when I needed them, but inevitably declined my offers to leave a tip for his expert opinion. He may be old enough to retire but will be missed anyhow.
