In 2012, the Met Museum held an exhibit on the development of the modern guitar with an emphasis on the role played by the Italians.
I can assure you that standing about a foot from D'Angelicos and D'Aquistos - even if protected by glass cases - was a strong, positive emotion I will never forget.

A little cringey, though, when you see him spraying lacquer with his unprotected face inches away.
I noticed that. I also noticed a lot of tool work without gloves or eye pro too. But, when you're that good....

Things were done differently then - I was actually surprised he didn't have a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth while spraying.
