The other day I saw a local place up here where I'm at had an open mic nite. So I said, I'ma go on down there and bring my F30r-ce and play an original song or two, if they let me.

Sure enough, they let me! and in fact I played two originals, and both were well received. Mostly because I had like 6 friends and family supporting me, but probably also because I was the only act that had an instrument. However, I had never played micc'ed up as a solo guitar/singer songwriter for a crowd of strangers before, so their support was helpful.

Now mind you I'm the type of guy that would get up there and sing a suicide karaoke song. So being in front of a crowd speaking, telling jokes or singing is one thing, but playing acoustic guitar in a quiet setting with it amped up where every note can be heard was extremely nerve wracking. Of course thinking so hard trying not to mess up, I did!, three notes in, but no one noticed, lol.

It was a song I wrote for my wife, so it's kind of sappy, heartfelt and I could see the crowd visibly liked it, be-bopping their heads along to the chord progression. Then when I ended, I felt the huge Wphew!, accepted the applause and kind words of the host after and said damn! that was a rush. 😀

Next, they said the guitar was a little louder than the vocals, and I said well I can adjust it and play another song if you like?, And they all agreed. Now I finally felt like I was settled in and could relax. This time I said to myself I'll hit them with the complete opposite feel, more brooding, dramatic and gory, lol. So I confidently started my second song only to mess up my own lyrics on the second verse! :ROFLMAO:, oy vey this performing live is not for the faint of heart. Nevertheless I kept the melody going til I could get back on track and then I of course finished it strong! More applause👏, man I can't wait to do this again!

Turns out they want to do it every month, so I said I'll see you next month! I'm excited, especially now that I got the first time jitters out of the way, I am already thinking of new original songs to try out for the next one.

Even better, the host then introduced me to a local young lady who sings and produces, and she might need a guitarist, or I may need a singer, so who knows what may come of that? I'm game since you only live once.

Who else does open mic nite and do you play covers, or originals?

I just played one last Monday night on our ski trip to Bend, OR.

I played an original that my cat helped me write called I Smell the Dogs On You. I played Doc Watson's version of Summertime. I also played a bit of Death Don't Have No Mercy...probably not the best choice lol.

I borrowed a Martin from the guy who was up before me.

Been a long time since I was a regular. Used to play them when I was between bands.

Did a one off a couple of years ago at Nauti Spirits in Cape May. Had my Niece come up an sing with me!

Wow, great story! Especially the part about the local young lady, lol. And yeah, the applause is always nice.

I've never done an open mic. Many moons ago I was a regular for a while at the "talent night" at the Palomino in North Hollywood. They had a backup band, and I played keys for this crazy blues singer who could really belt it out. It was a "country" place, so we never won the contest, but we put it out there!

More recently, but still quite a few years ago, we went downtown to the Bayou in Salt Lake and Mrs. Cougar's girlfriend visiting from SoCal talked the band into letting me sit in. The place was packed. They had an old Wurlitzer electric piano, no singer, but we played an up-tempo shuffle blues, I played a solo, the sax played a solo, the guitarist added a solo, it was great. I was stunned when we ended and the crowd went absolutely wild. A night to remember!

Haven't done it in a while, I was a sort of regular at one in a Border's years ago. I'm not sure I ever got comfortable but it was a little easier each time.

I stand in front of people all day as a teacher, but weirdly and confusingly, that first Open Mic I was literally drenched in sweat when I was done. Go figure.

I host a couple of them, and try to go out to several when time allows.

We get all levels that show up. From people who could easily be touring pros, to local semi-pros, to people who only know a handful of songs. We're pretty fortunate as the whole local scene is very supportive.

I love playing live, and I'm glad to be able to facilitate others at a level they feel comfortable with. There's a real thrill being able to perform for people, and open mikes are the only opportunity for some folks to do that.

But don't bring karaoke or backing tracks to my open mike, please.

I forgot to mention that the host challenges players to write a new song every week, offering a song prompt to get your creative juices going.

Some of my best tunes have been dashed off in response.

Do you guys prefer people playing original songs or covers at open mics?

I would rather hear a cover of a good song than most crappy originals I hear out there.

One open mic I have played a few times requires that one of your 2 songs be an old timey or traditional song.

We don't have a problem with either. I like to encourage folks who write original music to play it.

On the other hand, if you're not Bob Dylan, don't write songs with ten verses when three would do.

I don’t know that covers are any better than originals in the open mic setting, but I always thought the point of an open mic was for people to try out their original stuff 🤷‍♂️

I guess it depends on the nature of the open mic. I mean if there is a combination of things people are getting up there and doing; poetry one second, spoken word the next, then comedy etc, in that scenario then I think originals fit in better.

If everyone is going up there belting out a cover, then it might be weird to play something only you know.

Depends on the venue. An Open Mike is also a place for people to perform if they don't have a full set of material, or to meet and hang out with other musicians.

It's also been my experience that most* venues that are "originals only" are only that way because the owners are too cheap to pay ASCAP/BMI/SESAC, and that figures into a lot of their other business practices.

*"most," not all.

True that, got a friend with a karaoke business, got hit hard with fees, stopped offering those songs as options.
