I can't believe it - my nephew and some of his Marine buddies branded themselves on the butt with a hot coat hanger, in big capital letters, "USMC." Then he proudly texted home photos of his brand. It looked really painful.

I'm thinking there was alcohol involved...

Maybe they didn't have money to have it done as a tattoo? Yes, I'm making a (very weak) excuse for them.

Ouch! Is this some kind of initation ritual? Serious question, I'm not familiar with Navy/Army stuff at all...

Yeah, he's a Jarhead. I like to remind him that the USMC is a division of the US Navy.

if you get another answer, believe it, but is see this as something that people tend to do when they are not thinking clearly. There is sometimes peer pressure from other members of the military but I don't think of this as something explicitly associated with US military service.

I fear for humanity's future survival o_O

Which is as unpolitical as I could say it and still get the point across.

Naw.....Marines have been doing stupid stuff for 245 years.

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!” Eleanor Roosevelt

I ended up about 25 numbers away from possibly being sent to Vietnam in the second draft lottery, so I can’t really relate to the military mindset. But I gotta say, what we need a lot of today is people acting smart rather than, well, not smart.

My son, also in Military, Air Force. Thank your son for his service. That being said. Millennials somehow didn't develop much common sense. My boy (I'm so proud ) has made so many bad decisions in his life. Some involving alcohol, some not. He now maintains F-16's. Hate to say it but knowing how he grew up. That's a little scary.

I respect my nephew for volunteering in the USMC. His unit is being deployed somewhere soon. If this is how they release the tension, so be it.

We never did stupid stuff like that in the Navy...
