I have a Givson! I got it at a yard sale in Rhode Island for five or 10 bucks, from a family who was moving back home to India. It's an archtop, and the F-holes look like they were carved with a dull pocket-knife. I think the frets are aluminum. The tailpiece is aluminum and also looks like it was carved by hand. The bridge is and pickguard are plastic.

But the sheer oddness of the thing -- that pseudo-Gibson knockoff logo, the garish sticker inside -- I couldn't NOT buy it.

While it's easy to laugh at such "workmanship," you have to remember that there is such poverty in India that much of the population cannot afford a decent instrument. So, Givson fullfills a need I suppose. Affordable, sort of functional.

I currently have it set up for slide playing and it don't sound bad, considering.
I think a bunch of First Act guitars can head over there if they want 'em. They oughta' be banned to prevent anyone who really wants to learn the instrument from buying one.

Ah, I didn't realize FMIC hung on to them until 2015. My seven years was from the purchase in '96 until moving to Ovation's factory. Plus I'll blame cold meds...

SWR was in bad shape before FMIC, and Steve Rabe had been gone for several years before that, so I don't know if it ever made sense for Fender to buy that one. FMIC had the rights to the Sunn brand back in the '89s and the amplifier company was long long gone when Fender attempted to revive it decades later.

I'm not an Ampeg guy either, but the consensus on Talkbass.com is that Yamaha has been good for Ampeg, and a huge improvement over Loud Technology.
Hey, JTE, long time no see! I always remember you were the guy who verified D'Addario was Guild's string supplier (or at least a major source) when it was just a "hunch" on my part. :)

YGG marketing is quick! They show Guild already on their front page with a D-55 and a Starfire V on positions 1 and 2!

"Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc. is committed to providing the best products for guitar players through several distinct brands: Yamaha®, Line 6®, and Ampeg®, as well as the brands of Córdoba Music Group: Córdoba® and Guild® guitars, HumiCase® instrument cases, and DeArmond® pickups."

And once again, no, we are not playing Yamahas now. We also didn't play Avnets or Fenders or Cordobas, right? Guild is a brand name. And a brand name is owned by somebody. By the founders (like Guild until 1966) or by competitors who want to increase market share (like YGG) or get rid of a competitor or by financial investors (like Servco Pacific Inc. who owns the majority of FMIC or Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. who own the majority of Gibson) or very unusual even all own employees (like Taylor Guitars since 2021 through its 100% ESOP).

Seeing that bracing doesn’t make me think too well of their woodwork. 4 fan braces is less than the typical minimum of 5 and misses the crucial center fan brace that helps to reinforce the center seam. Not to mention the fact that there is no attempt to taper the ends at all. It’s pretty clunky.
The ad copy states “aged for seven or eight years on a healthy diet of sun and rain…” I hope they didn’t leave the wood out in the rain all that time. Good way to get split spaghetti.
”And finally fitted and dried for days to see if it would crack…” ? I imagine they’d be throwing out a lot of finished guitars if that’s their QC method.

Thats why you never trust ad copy that’s written by a marketing department.

Just imagine if Gibson and Fender couldn't compete with Guild. Hoshino USA has been here a long time, super wise marketing move, resulted in all kinds of incredible guitar for George Benson, Steve Vai just to name a couple at the top. Yamaha, who is a competitor to Hoshino, could use Guild to compete with both Ibanez and Gibson/Fender. Send your comments in now. "Be the change you want to see".

While the new Guilds look nice, the market is flooded with MIC product as it stands now, to me totally watering down the brand. I can only see things looking up from here.

Anyone want to wager if some Yamaha electric models will be fitted with DeArmonds?

I think Yamaha realizes they just upgraded their entire line of offerings. Outside of their LL acoustics and handmade offerings, some of their high end bass lines, they have never had a high end acoustic like a Guild D55. Or 512. Ever...Thanks for the pic Ralf and the encouragement. And I think we are all just having some fun with the Yamaha purchase, I know my BR is a Guild etc. And I actually prefer the Yamaha purchase vs the Fender one. And certainly I was not a fan of the Cordoba purchase. So, things are looking up...

Nothing. No press release or other mentioning from CMG's side.
According to the filed papers it's a done deal and the official date of acquisition was February 7th, 2023.

Most days, I don't even know why Cordoba decided to buy Guild.

The factory folks will probably be safe, but I wonder how much of the management and support groups (managers, HR, payroll, marketing, sales, etc) will be let go? And will the top managers get a golden parachute? Since Yamaha USA is just down the road it seems at least things like HR and payroll can be done from there.

Yes, this! Maybe rebrand the MIC acoustics as "Madeira" or just ditch them and sell Yamahas in that price bracket and leave the high end for Guild.
